A case for Allen Ginsberg Way

From the comments on the Allen Ginsberg's former apartment quickly rented post:

As a long time resident of East 12 Street (I am between A & B) a project I looked into but never took on is to have East 12 Street between 1st and A renamed Allen Ginsberg Way. It is a totally doable project requiring signatures and bringing it up the community board #3. Anyone interested in taking on such project?

Anyone?

That's my block! I think it would be a wonderful distinction. I remember Allen saying "bravissimo" when we planted the first tree on the block.

i don't know about now but the message on nambla's phone used to specifically encourage young boys to join and tell them that it was ok. that they were different.
(i called because there were street demonstrations next door to my apartment where the "head?" of nambla lived.

It is also my block. I will personally appear at any CB board meeting to vigorously oppose the renaming of this or any other street in honor of some half pint "celebrity." This whole street naming thing needs to stop.

I can understand an objection to all of these silly street namings, but to call Allen Ginsberg a 'half pint "celebrity"' is to deny the entire cultural history of the neighborhood in the 50s, 60s and 70s

He was one of the most influential people of his generation and that alone deserves some respect.

...some half pint "celebrity."...

Name a more famous 20th century poet who is not Robert Frost? Come on. Ginsberg's as famous as you can get without having James DeFranco play in a move. Wait. That's already happened. He's not quite Lady Gaga famous but I"m pressed to think of anyone from the neighborhood who is more famous. Maybe Emma Goldman? Maybe Philip Glass? LES Jewels? Chloe? Nah. I'd go with Ginsberg.
