GrowNYC opens a new greenmarket at Astor Place on Tuesdays through November

[Random Astor Place photo]

GrowNYC is teaming up with the Village Alliance for a new Astor Place Greenmarket on Tuesdays — starting today. (Last week's debut was washed out due to Tropical Storm Isaias.)

The market, located on the south plaza at Astor Place (Eighth Street-Lafayette), will continue through Nov. 24. Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Some info via the EVG inbox:

With a selection of locally-grown vegetables and orchard fruits, baked goods, cider, jams, maple syrup and honey from regional farmers, this Greenmarket is sure to be a community favorite, especially for those residents who were devoted to GrowNYC's previous greenmarket at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery.

GrowNYC's Greenmarkets work to preserve local farmland, while ensuring that New Yorkers across all five boroughs have access to fresh, healthy food grown right here in our region. A central component of Greenmarket’s mission and operations is product integrity: everything sold at market is 100% farmer grown, produced, caught or foraged.

The vendors include:

  • Kernan Farms Vegetables from Cumberland County, N.J.
  • Remsburger Honey & Maple Honey & maple syrup from Dutchess County, N.Y.
  • Wilklow Orchards Orchard and small fruits, vegetables, cider, baked goods and jams from Ulster County, N.Y.

You can find GrowNYC's COVID-19 safety protocols here.

This is nice! Why did it ever moe then? This is pretty close to Union Square, the church made it make sense location wise. Maybe not busy enough.

Hallelujah!! Best thing that has happened to the neighborhood since they shut down the Stuyvesant Church Farmers' Market!! I was at Astor Place at 9:00 a.m.(Thank you EVGrieve)& the Kernan stand was exactly as I remembered. And the same people too! Fresh tomatoes grown in a field (in our home they were called Mary's tomatoes), fresh corn, peaches (I'm eating one now - juicy), armful bunches of basil (Pesto!, FRESH cauliflower, FRESH cucumbers as nature made them.

In years gone by I would wait all year for Mary to say "Tomatoes next week." & then wait for cauliflower to show up in their stand soon after. I mourned their departure and rejoice that they're back!

Wilklow Orchards also has beautiful fresh fruit (peaches and more) and baked goods, even more tomatoes. And those big bags of apples great for applesauce.

The bad news - they're only there on Tuesdays! I'd go every day if possible.

(and before everyone flames at me, I KNOW the Kernan stand was at Union Square on Weds but job, time, weather, aging joints often stalled a trip there. And I find the Tompkins Square market not as good & quite pricey. And in pandemic times, its layout is frightening.)

Fresh, nutritious food--what in the world is more essential? Not much. Great news.

Great to have another option nearby!
Sunday @ tompkins, they’ve done a great job keeping everyone apart waiting and masked. Kudos to the producers there too.

Hope Astor will feel as safe as Tompkins does.
