They were lighting off illegal fireworks all night on Avenue D and East Houston Street and it was huge and loud. I thought the mayor said the NYPD was going to crack down on illegal fireworks. Now from what I saw and heard.

The Post had this item today:

A man was busted on July Fourth after police found a large stash of illegal fireworks inside his car in the East Village, sources said.

The 31-year-old was spotted by cops allegedly handing off fireworks to another person at the corner of Avenue D and East Houston Street at about 5:30 p.m., according to sources.

The stash of pyrotechnics included mortars and other aerial displays.

I love chasing street fireworks! It's really fun :)

Nothing says "I love my neighborhood" like setting off illegal fireworks and THEN leaving all this trash behind for others to clean up.

Young people (b/c that's who largely set off illegal fireworks) are so damn lazy, entitled, self-centered and heedless. I'd like to see them bring back the draft: sign up with your local draft board on your 18th birthday. Boot camp would shape up a lot of these jerks (male AND female).

I'm all for celebrating the 4th with (legal) community fire works, BBQs and parties, but the illegal fireworks have gotten out of control in the East Village. Illegal fireworks are a serious fire hazard (especially in parts of the county affected by drought and heat waves), pose risks of personal injury, and disturb the peace. We're not talking about a few fire crackers here, some of these are significant incendiary devices making ear-shattering booms. This is not pleasant for many residents, families and pets.

Funny, I distinctly remember that being said during the draft riots of the Vietnam War era.
.....The more times change...the more they stay the same.

Setting off large fireworks and explosives in crowded areas is dangerous. Tragically, Matiss Kivlenieks, a 24-year old goaltender for the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League, died Sunday, July 4th after an accident involving fireworks at a party in Novi, Michigan, according to CNN. Random people shooting off powerful fireworks in the densely populated East Village is a danger to residents.

All the extra trash is gross, shit is bad enough; and fireworks are played out after maybe the 1000000th time this summer already, but unrelated: fireworks packaging is always so hilarious and great.
