Good price for gas, although I remember that storm and my car was buried under snow until almost March, and so I wouldn’t have been buying much of it.
1994 was a golden year for the East Village and for Internet: Netscape Navigator was released, and Jeff Bezos launched Amazon in Seattle. OJ Simpson was arrested in LA after he fled in his white Bronco on the 405, Global 33 was the place for tapas and Cosmos on Friday nights, Nancy Kerrigan was attacked with a metal pipe by Tonya Harding’s buddies, Kurt Cobain died, joining the 27 club, the Knicks lost the NBA finals, while the NY Rangers won the Stanley Cup. Leshkos and Kiev were still serving pierogis and kasha varnishkas at 2AM. Shah Bagh, Mitali, Sonali, Haveli, Taj, Panna served up cheap Indian curry and puffy poori bread on 6th street, crowds lined up for the Soy Burger Dinner and Vegetable Yakisoba at Dojos, before heading over to Lucky Cheng’s for a drink and a drag show, or clubbing at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, Pyramid, The Tunnel, Roxy, The Palladium, and Webster Hall. Life Cafe, Yaffa, and Mogador were still around. And The Village Voice, which cost $1.25, started investigating a new mayor named Rudolph Giuliani, who would go on to bigger but not necessarily better things. The pace of gentrification picked up,now almost all of the old hangouts are gone, but not forgotten.
hell yeah, gaseteria, pushed a car all the way here with some friends back in the day after we ran out of gas at the top of the williamsburg bridge in the middle of the night! GOOD TIMES!
