Scenes from last night's accident on 12th Street via Twitter

Last evening, an EV Grieve reader passed along an e-mail saying there had been an accident on 12th Street near First Avenue: "5 folks hit according to cops nobody seriously injured." (I was busy at the time looking for models on Avenue A.)

East Village resident Chris O'Leary (who also blogs, blogs about beer and tweets) tracked down what happened via Twitter....: "According to the cop outside, it was a drunk driver who fled on foot. Happened around 6pm."

And Chris tracked down these photos at the scene from Twitter users....

I wonder if the driver who fled on foot was the guy I saw captured outside the check cashing place between 10th and 11th Streets.

He was lying on the sidewalk, blood covering the right side of his face, hands cuffed behind him and cops and an ambulance there. One guy passing by practically spat at him, snarling something about good for whoever beat him up, which I was told was the boyfriend of one of the injured young women...

I'd never seen anyone not on TV looking like that...but if he hit people and was drunk then he deserved it. But it might not be the same guy...

This would never work as fiction because the license plate is "RUDE 1".

Shit! I didn't even notice that, l.e.s.ter!

The guy who caused it all was the drunk in the black car with Connecticut plates spun around facing First Avenue. He managed to slam into the Rude 1 SUV (owned by a guy named Rudy, hence the plate) and pushed it into the white car, in which a woman was sitting. How the hell drunk do you have to be at 7 PM at night, and how fast do you have to be driving, to cause this much havoc on a small side street?
