Permits for the two, 7-floor retail-residential buildings from Extell Development along East 14th Street are still pending.
According to DOB records, the city disapproved the plans for the building at 500 E. 14th St. (at Avenue A) back on Nov. 18. (The city disapproved the plans for 524 E. 14th St. on Sept. 18.)
Meanwhile, a nearby resident points out that the empty lot at No. 500 filled up with water (again) after last Tuesday's rain … (the reader wondered if there is something going on with the area's water table … )

Maybe workers plan on drowning the rats?

A look at the 1865 Viele Sanitary & Topographical Map of the City and Island of New York shows a stream running through this area. It's probably the source of the lake.
That's is more than just rain. I hope officials look into this sooner than later for the sake of the surrounding buildings. There are still very active waterways under the land, for example, the Empire State Building has a system of pumps that prevents the natural water running underneath from flooding it.
This is so wonderful! When it freezes over, we can all go ice skating! Thank you to the developers for providing this excellent amusement for the locals.

My guess filled with Fiji water, the new tenants deserve nothing less.

There is an underground stream that runs under the 3rd St Music Settlement on 2nd Ave and 11th St, they even have a permanent pump in the basement to keep the water level low. Perhaps this water is the same stream.
tbh this would actually be a really great spot for an ice rink. The developers could make a killing off of it too, everybody wins. They could resume residential construction in the spring.
You can't have an ice rink in NYC unless you have some horrible corporate music blasting in the background. Its mandated.

Actually this is the coastline. North of 14th Street is landfill. But there is an inlet around where this is puddling. Remember, too, this entire land known as the LES is marshland and at sea level, filled in over the centuries by garbage. What you are seeing now is the water table rising after a good rain. I hope all the new buildings are storm-surge proof, but I doubt it (though it is supposed to be mandated by the city in what's known as Zone C).
There is an ice skating rink with rental skates just steps away in a Stuy Town!
