Report: Cab strikes and kills man on Cooper Square

A yellow cab going southbound struck and killed a man last night on Cooper Square at Fifth Street, according to published reports.

The collision between the cab, an SUV, and the man happened around 9 p.m. The Associated Press article in the Daily News lists the victim as 87. The Post puts his age at 70. EMTs took the man to Bellevue, where he died from his injuries. Authorities did not release the man's name pending notification of his family.

The driver, 45, remained at the scene and has not been charged. Both news reports say the investigation is ongoing. Neither report offers up other details, such as if the cab driver ran a light or if the pedestrian was crossing at a crosswalk.

Updated 9:30 a.m.

Per DNAinfo:

The man was crossing east to west near East Fifth Street when he was hit by the yellow cab about 9 p.m., the NYPD said.

He was in the crosswalk but did not have the light, police said.

NYPD always lies and blames the victims of car drivers. They do not fail to that this time as usual. TLC accepts complaints regarding unsafe driving by taxi and car service drivers, drivers pay fines. Since NYPD won't protect us we can use this tool. About 80 percent of the vehicles in our area are licensed by the TLC

Isn't this the location a woman was run down a year or so ago? A person from our neighborhood? Killed she was.

Yeah. It's a bitch. Police blame pedestrians. Pedestrians blame cyclists. Killer cars? No problemo.

That intersection is a mess and confusing for drivers and pedestrians. I see so many almost accidents right there. I always walk to 7th st to cross by Cooper Union when I head west down 5th st.

Streetsblog asks a good question here: even if the victim indeed did not have the green light at the moment of the crash, did he enter the crosswalk with the light? Many of the lights change too fast for the elderly to cross and it's absolutely the responsibility of vehicle operators to watch very carefully when they drive. I doubt we'll find out much more from NYPDl, but they must have been thrilled to leak the "crossing against the light" tidbit, even if it's only based on the driver's report. They do that quite often; the dead can't speak for themselves. Remember how Kelly Hurley "fell off" her bike?

the light on third avenue is too quick
if you have a carrage, cart or walker it's just not green long enough to safely cross

NYPD doesn't charge drivers because they want to lower their crime stats.

Where was the cab driver speeding to, I wonder?

Yes, when you are 87 and crossing the street in NYC, you are not given enough time to cross before the light changes. This man most likely started with the light but he was old and therefore not speedy so the light probably changed to red while he was crossing. Police, use your heads.

A longtime local Ed (Eddy) a freelance carpenter, and habitué of the park, from Haiti, was hit on his bike by a cabdriver while cycling on Canal Street. This happened a couple of days ago to one of the nicest guys from our neighborhood. Praying for you Ed !
