Owner Zohar Zohar has announced that Zucker Bakery on Ninth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue is closing its doors on Sunday after nearly seven years in business.
Here's the message on the Zucker website:
Dear all, to continue our journey, explore and expand, we have decided to close our family bakery after seven amazing years. We are grateful for all the love, the support and the experiences that we shared with all of you.
The Mediterranean- and Eastern European-inspired bakery opened in September 2011, and quickly found a loyal following using ingredients such as dates, cardamom and cloves for its cookies and pastries.
The Times once noted that their cookies "make you feel like you have left New York, incorporating flavors and spices that hint of other lands: date cookies spiced with cinnamon, dulce de leche-filled alfajores with coconut..."
Zohar, an East Village resident, worked in high-end kitchens such as Daniel and Bouley before taking time off to raise her family. Zucker was her first business.

Crap. Loved their stuff.
That's sad to hear. Charming place with good food.
Sad!
BTW I'm proud and happy that we have a number of successful Israeli-run establishments in the neighborhood. This was one.
Wow, what a shame! Such a great spot. The charm of 9th Street has really disappeared over the 5 years.
Everything tasted good at Zucker's, from their matzoh ball soup to salads to their pastries. The seemed to do a steady business but I guess it wasn't enough.
it's a very tough business and zohar did a GREAT job---just time to move on :)
As far as I knew—and I did ask—the place wasn't very accommodating to vegans. It was a deal-breaker for me, but I'm happy other people were able to enjoy the bakery.
Zucker was one of the best things about the East Village. I'm so sorry to see it go. It had that old time, welcome feeling when you walked in, unlike in today's more hipster places, and the service and especially the food...salads, sandwiches, bakery goods, were all delicious and served lovingly with a unique style. I'm very sad today.
