A short tribute — sob — to the World Famous Pee Phone™

Many of you likely already noticed this disheartening disappearance this summer.

On Avenue A at Seventh Street, the long, distinguished reign of the World Famous Pee Phone™ has come to an undistinguished end ...
Back in March, workers started removing the open-air pay phones on Avenue A... though the World Famous Pee Phone™ was spared at the time.

Anyway, the booth was a recurring character through the early years here in these pages — and elsewhere! (And I don't honestly remember who bestowed the booth with the Pee Phone moniker. Eden? I retain the Pee Phone™ though for merchandising and the forthcoming bingeworthy Peacock series.)

A quick look back... when it served as a lending library...
... when there was a price increase...
... and just a day in the life...
Thank you for always being there for us.

I'm surprised there isn't a hole in the sidewalk etched out from all the pee. All the stories that phone could tell...

A shrine should be erected.

Rome has the Colosseum, China has the Great Wall and the East Village has the Pee Phone. Keep on reaching for the stars EV! And I second the call for a shrine, perhaps a porcelain recreation of the old phone. And I know just how the faithful can pay their obeisance.

Thank you, as ever, for your astute coverage of the neighborhood news that matters most. Keep up the great work! xo, jg

If the phone was still there, we'd only have 1 foot to squeeze between the waiters and patrons of the restaurant and there structures in the street and the sidewalk

I heard Apple almost sued for the Pee Phone name but instead found Iphone enough of a piss take.
