ICYMI: That oddly configured Walgreens is closing on Union Square

This has come up a few times in emails and in comment threads...So!

As posted on Jan. 24, the Walgreens on the SE corner of 14th Street and Fourth Avenue is closing on Feb. 17, per the window signage.

Walgreens customers can then go to other Walgreens, Duane Reades or Duane Reade by Walgreens locations, including the outpost at 1 Union Square. (For the sake of journalisming, we walked from the soon-to-close Walgreens to the Duane Reade — 50 steps!)
This corner Walgreens was renovated and expanded into the space above the quick-serve restaurants on Fourth Avenue back in 2010...
What could possibly fit in this space now (?).

I can only assume this low building will be demolished soon and due to Carlina Rivera's vote to change the zoning (via the tech hub) a new glass tower for offices (mid-town south) or luxury condos.

This store will remain EMPTY for a long long time. There are DOZENS of empty retail spaces all over the neighborhood (actually in every neighborhood now). What worries me is that the two major corners there are now empty spaces which means a return to the 70's and '80's when Union Square was DANGEROUS and a Wasteland.

@ Noble, I would think every available inch of air rights has long been sold off.

"I would think every available inch of air rights has long been sold off."

Don't bet on it, real-estate and developers in this town are a creative bunch and our elected official will always do what they say.

Waiting for a comment from someone refuting the preciseness of the 50 steps. Please don't make me walk all the way over there.

Not looking forward to another empty storefront on 14th. 14th could be a bustling thoroughfare that takes advantage of access to trains, but for whatever reason it keeps sliding into disrepair. Are rents really that high and landlords that stubborn?
