Checking in on the USA Super Stores, opening soon on 3rd Avenue and 10th Street

Here's a progress report on the USA Super Stores (yes plural) coming to the former Duane Reade on the SW corner of Third Avenue and 10th Street...

Workers have been filling the space with large displays of items, including Marcal toilet paper ...
... and tins of McKenzie & Lloyds Danish Style Butter Cookies ...
We first reported on this pending arrival on Feb. 3. Looks like the place will be open SOON.

USA Super Stores have been opening in former Duane Reade/Walgreens outposts around the city, including Avenue D and Second Street.

This Duane Reade by Walgreens closed in early March 2020 ... several years after expanding and gobbling up several small storefronts, forcing Excel Art and Framing Store and East Village Cheese (which was never the same) to relocate.

How is it that in a city with a law that prohibits price gouging on milk that USA Super Stores can sell it for $2.99 a gallon while many groceries charge up to $5 or $6 a gallon? Organic milk at $6 a half gallon is double the price, and if you buy smaller sizes the price per gallon of regular milk can be $7-$8. In fact most New York groceries are 20-40% above what you would pay in the suburbs. Upstate you’ll pay about half what you pay at many Manhattan groceries. How is it this chain can sell products at a much lower price than the chain grocery stores? Duane Reade has turned into a giant ripoff, and CVS has been raising prices throughout the pandemic, especially as nearby chain stores continue to shut down. I'm glad they finally have some competition.

Yes, CVS--and, unfortunately, my preferred Duane Reade--are price-gougers, having gobbled up competitors and space. These discount stores may be convenient for some things, but they are not great alternatives.
