Hawk vs. pigeon today in Tompkins Square Park

The pigeon eventually escaped... Later, though, the hawk dined on an already-dead pigeon... Photos by Bobby Williams... not sure if it was the same pigeon...

I used to love the hawk but now I'm starting to feel bad for the pigeons.

The already dead pigeon was caught around 12:30 or 1 pm. The hawk flew into a flock of pigeons and isolated that one pigeon and bled it out under the benches with many onlookers. When she was about to go eat, Shirtless Bandada Man came over and sat on the bench next to her. She got spooked and took off without her kill.

These shots came out great, Bobby!

These were different pigeons - the one being eaten was already dead when the other pigeon escaped. A gruesome day for the pigeons...the rats had the day off.

There are too many pigeons in the area due the well meaning souls that dump bread, rice and expensive seeds for them but mostly get dined on by the ever growing rat population. I'm thrilled the hawks are here to put some good old natural balance to the east village.

the last time I spoke to someone that was feeding pigeons they told me "I would be part of the next revolution and would be killing everyone". So considered yourself warned.

Yea, I tend to not talk to people that feed rodents or their flying cousin.

Also, seconded, BEST HAWK EVER.
