EV Grieve is an ad-free East Village blog where you'll find local news on the real estate, restaurants and residents of the East Village NYC. Launched in December 2007.
EVG favorite The Emerald Inn, the Upper West Side saloon that has been serving up drinks since FDR was in office, is officially closing on April 30. The fucking rent increased from $17,500 to $35,000. And because this is the way of NYC these days — a Kate Spade store is taking over the space.
Jack Spade hosted the Holloween Dog Parade, two summers ago. I don't know if people are aware but the Holloween Dog Parade has reached the international press. Photographers from all around the world come here to photograph the purebreds. This is how they destroy a neighborhood, with stupid events for tourists. And by bringing in designers that have nothing to do with the East Village and everything to do with gentrification.
This sucks! A great place The Emerald Inn. I too like old bars.
Not two summers ago. I meant two years ago at the TSP Halloween Dog Parade. This past parade was even worse. I think that they now have one in Brooklyn as well. Because we are the same as Brooklyn.
Have a story idea or tip about something happening in the East Village? Or maybe a photo? Or several photos? Or video! We'd love to hear about it. Or see it. Or something. Please go here to submit a tip.

Here, you'll find things that you may or may not be interested in about the East Village and other parts of New York City. Appreciating what's here while it's still here. Remembering what's no longer here. Wishing some things weren't here that are here.

Sucks. I didn't know Kate Spade was even still popular.
Horrible news! That was one of my favorite stops on my bar crawl. One less place to visit when I come back.
I wish you could landmark businesses too. This is just sad.
Oh yay. A Kate Spade store. Awesome.
One more reason for commercial rent regulation and/or regulating the spread of chain stores post-Bloomberg. Unless NYers are OK with living in a mall.
i have gone to emerald inn at least 20 times.
i have never and will never go to kate spade (or anything like that).
NY is not for New Yorkers anymore.
We need to protest against this unfortunate trend, and yes, get rent protection for visitors.

Jack Spade is Kate's gay brother. He lives in the West Village, but dreams of moving to the East Village because it's still a little dicey here.
The Emerald Inn is a great place. I will miss it.
But just take a walk around (you pick the neighborhood) and everything you loved about it is gone... or doggone.
SoHo? Kate Spadeville! How many of these "luxury" places can one city sustain?!
