Looking at two dormant Bowery storefronts

In June 2017, there was news that The New Stand — a hipsterized convenience store — was opening a retail outlet at 306 Bowery, Patricia Field's former storefront.

Fifteen months later, the space between East Houston and Bleecker sits very empty... without any signs of activity...or any signs at all...

The New Stand didn't respond to an email query about the address. The company, with several NYC locations, is reportedly expanding elsewhere in the country.

Meanwhile at 347 Bowery at Third Street...

The ground-floor retail is still vacant. Early this year, signage arrived for Pilotworks, which was planning a "culinary incubator" for its food businesses to sell products.

The market was set to be open by now. The Pilotworks signage is gone... and the space sits empty...

A rep who gave me the information in February is no longer working with Pilotworks. The new contacts did not respond to questions on the status of the project.

Also, the COOL tag that arrived on or about Aug. 12 remains on the side of the retail-residential complex, where the penthouse fetched $17 million...

Updated...

Ah, a new tag arrived in the past 24-48 hours...

Although "cool" is not my favorite tag I have to admit it looks smashing on the high high end building. The residents and the developer must be thrilled as well since now their building has some of the much talked about downtown cool, East Village hip and grit. Forget the Verizon building on 2nd and 13th street the epicenter for graffiti is this building.

$17 million to live in a building that's getting tagged with graffiti?!

Welcome to the EV, Rubes!

And tagged because it is ugly. So $17 million to live in an ugly tagged for ugliness building. But I guess we need to wash that foreign laundry some way, right? And what better cover.

For 17 million I’d expect at least a mural by Chico or Lee Quinones. What’s next, a NeckFace tag?

"tagged because it is ugly" -- erm, not really. tagged because it existed. It seems like a lot more stuff has been getting tagged this summer versus the past few summers. or maybe I'm just noticing it more?

@12:21pm: You're right: more stuff IS getting tagged. It goes with the general downhill motion of quality of life here: it's OK to be a fare-beater, it's OK to smoke marijuana on the streets, it's OK to do anything you decide to do b/c you feel like doing it, and to hell with everyone else.

NYC is going to regret abandoning broken-window policing. The question is how bad things have to get before anyone in authority takes action. And you know De Blah-sio is oblivious.

ANON 3:05 You are Correct. DeBLAZERO is the Most HYPOCRITICAL and WOLTHLESS Mayor we've had in a looong time.

305pm 290 murders in NYC last year, less than half the murders the city had in '98 the beginning of Giuliani's first mayoral term, so "broken windows" was/is alot of bullshit.

You do know the economy turned around after Clinton took office right? Hence why NYC's crime rate dropped. Another factor was crack went out of use from people seeing what addicts would become once hooked besides crack-crackdowns.

It is incredible the prices for the apartments and rents for the storefronts that the landlords are charging for the Bowery..and all along the Bowery there are homeless men begging for money and just hanging out on the street next the the SRO's and the large homeless shelter that has existed on the Bowery for many years. It really is a Tale of Two Cities.
