Checking in on East Village Meat Market

Text and photos by Stacie Joy

I stopped by East Village Meat Market, 139 Second Ave. between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street, over the weekend to pick up some flax seeded rye bread.

The bread, made by Moonrise Bakehouse, is available by prepay/preorder. Deliveries to the market occur on Fridays, with pickup between noon and 3:45 p.m.

While I'm there, manager Andrew Ilnicki shows off some of the available meat provisions (brisket, T-bone, short ribs, prime rib and porterhouse)...

The longtime meat market, which dates to 1970, has plenty of supplies, including Eastern European standbys like pierogies, sour cherry syrup, blintzes, borscht, and poppy seed rolls as well as dairy products like cheese, butter, eggs and milk. For now, they're open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

..and if you don't see it, ask! A lot of times they have to cut the chops to order, or grind your beef to order!

Some of the best ham I've ever had.

Been going there every Saturday since the stay at home order occurred. Before we were going maybe 2x a month. But these businesses need us the most at times like these! And all their steak selection is delicious!

On Saturdays they have hot cooked foods, including fabulous roast pork, ribs, potato dumplings in gravy, and a whole lot more. I've watched as week by week the line grows outside as people wait to get in, and walk out with giant shopping bags. One of the true gems of the East Village. (More people should shop at Russo's, I never see a line there.)

The last best place in Manhattan. Been going there for 30+ years. If they ever close, I’ll have to consider moving!

Best kielbasa in the tai-state area, period. I will go as soon as I can get to Manhattan again

If you're out of the area they will also ship your order to you. Visit their website for the updated menu and call the store to place your order. I live in Staten Island and placed my Easter order with them. I received everything in time for Easter -- a bit of "normal" in such trying times.

Garlic sausage, slab bacon and those $2 jars of fruit preserves. Delicious.

Been going there since they opened. I won’t buy meat anywhere else. So clean you could dine off the floor. If they ever close, I’ll starve!
