NYPD searching for this East Village rape suspect

Police are searching for a suspect who attempted to rape a woman after she entered her East Village apartment building Monday night.

According to WNBC New York:

The 23-year-old woman was walking into her home near 2nd Avenue just before midnight when the man allegedly followed her, lifted her dress and tried to assault her, police say.

The victim screamed, prompting the suspect to run away.

The suspect is described as male, white, between 20-25 years old, around 6-1 and 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing khaki pants, a dark zip-up sweater and a baseball cap.

As Gothamist reported, the NYPD has not released the location of the attack, only that it happened within the territory of the 9th Precinct.

The NYPD also released this surveillance footage of the suspect lingering outside the victim's apartment building.

Anyone with information about this case can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS

Newbies to the EV and possibly NYC need to be aware of who and what is around you at all times. The Starbucks and 7-11's may make you feel safe and at home but there are still freaks looking to take advantage of anyone that gives them a chance. It will be interesting when the cops get this guy if he has a history of this sort of attack, he acted like a predator hunting prey.

it would be GREAT if the cop's description of the guy's dress MATCHED the guy in this pic! If you have a video...maybe you could sort that out?

Easy to forget to do. But always look to see who's around when opening the front door to your building.

"Easy to forget to do. But always look to see who's around when opening the front door to your building." Especially if you are texting someone. Last night I saw a young woman in the doorway of her building and she was holding her phone up about her head. I thought she was photographing something on the door but instead she was taking a "selfie". Always distracted and never present = danger.

This probably lame advice but I recommend becoming friends with your deli or bodega guy. Those guys have my back when I'm having a bad day and know they'll help me if I need the cops.

Thats why bodega over 7/11 always. Eyes on the street, neighborly responsibility etc.. You just wont get that from a chain. Better prices too.
