We don't know many details, but the inexpensive sushi restaurant at 188 First Ave. between East 11th Street and East 12th Street has apparently closed for good.
Slum Goddess first pointed this out to us on Friday evening… and Oyama was closed all weekend. The phone goes unanswered … and they are listed as "not currently open" on Seamless.

I have ordered their special rolls every weekend for the past several years. It was a family run business without any "foodie" pretense and a favorite young people that did not have trust funds. It's been closed close to a month now and my hopes that there may be a renovation going on are now dashed.
They've been closed since Jun 1st at least. I go here every Sunday and its been closed since then. I actually had a mild panic attack and scared a friend of mine because I go here every Sunday and have for almost 10 years.
Late last year I begged them to get on Seamless to save their business. It was always dead in there.
They did. The kind Chinese lady was so so happy at all the new orders she was getting. Oyama always was a hidden sushi gem and it was great to see them doing better.
I am so sad to see this place go. I wonder what happened? Rent increase probably?
They were actually closed since May 17th... I made a comment somewhere asking if anyone knew what was up with Oyama. My wife and I had just come back from Asia and we were too tired to cook dinner and wanted our trusty sushi delivery from Oyama.
They were closed when we called... so sad. Their sushi was great for the price and while it wasn't Jiro quality, it was still excellent.
We'll miss Oyama =(
We only discovered this place last year, and have been regulars ever since. Food is excellent and the prices are unbeatable. We even ordered large trays of the vegetable rolls for parties at home, and they disappeared as quickly as we could serve them. A shame if they are closing for good; perhaps it's just a temporary situation? One can hope.

I ate there happily for years, but the lat two times I ordered delivery sushi, the fish was not fresh, and I wound up tossing most of it. Sorry to see them go, tho.

I contacted the businesses on either side of Oyama and they seem to be under the impression that they are renovating the interior (which is definitely within the realm of possibility).
