Oh, what a wonderful find. I go to the dog park every day, love the rare insects in Tompkins, and was delighted to find this picture. By the way, the story that the female eats the male after copulation is mainly a myth. Yes, sometimes the organ gets "stuck", but usually the male can pull it out and crawl around for another adventure. My compliments on this picture.

About five years ago, my wife and I were walking home on 7th St. during a busy Friday evening. And there was a huge mantis on the sidewalk at the corner of 1st Ave. I picked it up (well, it crawled up) with a stiff paper flyer, and carried it to Tompkins Square Park. The whole time, it clung to the flyer along the top edge, staring at me. It was an odd sensation. When we got to the park, it immediately sprung off the paper and took off into the air.

I don't know how long they live, but I assume the one in the photo is a different one.
