Hop Devil Grill/The Belgian Room closed now on Mondays; lack of football blamed

The sister bars here on St Mark's Place just west of Avenue A have cut back on their days open.

As the sign on the door notes, the bars will be closed on Mondays for the foreseeable future.

"Like many restaurants in our neighborhood, it sometimes gets a little quiet on Mondays after the football season ends."

The note goes on to say something about staying in and ordering mediocre Chinese food. (Maybe try Hot Kitchen?)

Oh yeah, don't you know? EV is hardcore football country. Sure, there might be more fans of the San Francisco 49ers and various other out of town teams than of the two hometown teams but that's beside the point. Football games are for bros, and thus the EV is THE place to watch football games in 2015.

Hahaha... the sports.

I don't even own a TV.

I don't buy it, my boyfriend and I always make cracks like "oh the game is on" when walking by one of the thousand sports bars in the EV. The point there is always a game on, between football, soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis or frisbee, sports fans like to watch anything that moves and gives them an excuse to drink and yell at a TV.

I admit I am a football fan. MNF (Monday Night Football) ended Dec. 22. The BCS National Championship Game (Ohio State v Oregon) was on Jan. 12.

So there hasn't been football on a Monday for some time. Are they just realizing this? There are some good college basketball games on Monday nights however.

Maybe these bars should diversify so they are not just beholden to people who watch football a few times a week (Saturday for college, Sunday for pro and Monday Night Football).

Yeah, its a real ghost town outside of those NFL game days.

I had a great idea the other night, that I'll give to people for free. You probably can make a lot of money on this.

Open a dance bar. It would be a place where dance videos played. Not Flashdance, but ballet, modern, etc. The Performing Arts library at Lincoln Center has an amazing archive of dance footage.

Anyway, that was my idea. Or maybe an opera bar, with no TV, and only operas on the jukebox.
