Neighbors curious about the 11 days of activity at Peter Brant's exhibition space on East 6th Street

[East 7th Street]

Some neighbors don't think that the people behind the incoming exhibition space for the Brant Foundation are being ... very good neighbors.

Last Wednesday, workers began loading equipment into the back of 421 E. Sixth St., the under-renovation exhibition space expected to be used by the billionaire art collector Peter Brant's Brant Foundation between Avenue A and First Avenue. This included the arrival of several high-powered CAT generators parked on East Seventh Street, outside the driveway/back entrance to the East Sixth Street property.

In the past several days, a handful of parking spaces (with generic No Parking Police Department signs) have been blocked off on East Sixth Street and East Seventh Street ...

There are also security guards posted on both streets... none of the guards have been very forthcoming with details. A reader finally found one to divulge more than a no comment/I don't really know ... according to one of the hired hands, the space is hosting an event for Dom PĂ©rignon on Friday.

In total, the activity surrounding this event will last 11 days, per the signs posted on 421 E. Sixth St.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, then you can call the caterer, as the sign suggests.

One neighbor who emailed us about the situation hopes that this won't be the upscale party norm for the building now that Brant and his organization is the owner.

Artist Walter De Maria, who died in July 2013 at age 77, bought the former Con Ed substation in 1980 to use as a home and studio.

Previously on EV Grieve:
Confirmed: Peter M. Brant buys Walter De Maria's amazing East 6th Street home and studio

1st permits filed for renovation of Walter De Maria's former home-studio on East 6th Street

More about the 1st show at Walter De Maria's former home-studio on East 6th Street

Here's what Peter Brant wants to do with his new exhibition space on East 6th Street

I live on this block, and I think they've been perfectly neighborly. I've spoken to a few people working on this site and they haven't been at all reticent about what they're doing.

He's probably having some kind of celebration / party in his new space. People need to get lives and mind their business. Now the guy is getting written up on blogs?

Peter Brant is bringing much-needed class and sophistication to this neighborhood. If you want your squats back move to Detroit. Echoing the previous commenter: get lives just because you can't afford champagne!

It's getting to the point where we blog shame our neighbors over absolutely nothing. There are so many more pressing issues to discuss than 'new tenant prepares for party.'

Let's give away all our parking spaces to the 1%ers, with private police to enforce the privilege. We'd mind our business if they weren't appropriating public property.

WHAT THE FUCKKKKKKK!!!!!!!
Is this Defend The Dom mornin' heah???
Heavens to Moigatroid that we might Bother the Billionaire.......or EVEN DARE to speak his name. Don't say ANYTHING about the swells......they might take their exhaust fumes and champagne bottle recycling business someplace else......WHAT WOULD WE DO THEN???

PS = I think above commenters might want to investigate this "Get A Life" phenomenon themselves if they really think blogging ISN'T specifically for bitchin', or that REAL Billionaire's are truly bothered by what's said about them here.

Nygrump, I agree, but all drivers parking on the street appropriate public property. Why are so many of our streets lined with private, FREE car storage? Drivers should pay for the privilege, not use public space as free car storage.

Wait until they start landing their private helicopters on the rooftops at midnight, then you can lecture is on what good neighbors the 1 percenters are. Pro tip: the ultra rich even complain about each others parties in the Hamptons all summer long.

Hmm, this particular billionaire has a lot of fanboys it seems.

I'm not a fan boy of this guy not have I ever heard his name before but it's getting to the point where people can't cross the street without it being blogged about. Everyone's so concerned with "big brother" which is hilarious because you're doing the same thing.

I believe the car users pay for the privilege of parking in the excise taxes and gas taxes and toll taxes and property taxes and sales taxes. And you do have to pay to use the space most of the time. However, if you have commercial plates, even from out of state, you are not allowed to park overnight. A couple of days I wouldn't care but they're hoarding what looks like 8-10 spaces for over a week.

unless they are getting and posting a permit from the city like movie/tv/commercial shoots are forced to, what right do they have to block off sections of the street parking?

Anonymous said...

I bet these are the same kinds of people who rope off sections of TSP for their private parties and won't let people walk through our park. See, they're already privatizing public space by commandeering whatever spaces they please. But we are supposed to be grateful becuase they are brining culture to the neighborood? it will be a miracle if anyone from the neighborhood is invited to these one percenter parties.

I envision one billionaire will begin buying entire blocks, kick out the residents and call it his (always a he) supermansion. Make what that Economakis or Schwimmer did look like peanuts.

Nygrump,

People with cars never pay their share, particularly those living in Manhattan. They are subsidized by the rest of us. Without exception.

Spoke to them as well and they do have permits. The city doesn't give those away to anyone, you have to pay for that privilege and it doesn't come cheap

All the windows on the front were lit up pink and purple last night. Looked like Willy Wonka's factory.

Pardon me, Mr. Brant; do you have any grey Poupon?

At CB3 meeting -- a priest and a parishioner from St Stanislaus, on 7th Street across from the north side of the building, just spoke about how the noise from the generators is interfering with church services and general quality of life. Not a good start for Mr Brant.

I saw a crane from 13th st looking south today, was that for him? I worked at a job next door to Mr Brant and his family many summers ago in Sagaponak. He is a really nice guy, and the boys are, well, boys. But the hot wife makes that family's desirability as neighbors value up by a million. Mrs Brant(Stephanie Seymour) is drop dead gorgeous at any age and so gracious. And I am not a fanboy, just a seasonal employee that worked next door.

wait, Dom Perignon?? Freegan alert, you know there will be 1/4 bottles in that trash!!

As for commenters about the fact a blog comments on a party. Ummm, we have be obsessed with the chocolate factory for decades. And that is what we do in the EV. At least we are not nodding off in the doorway or dropping needles on the curb in front.
