A quick check on the incoming Black Seed bagels on 1st Avenue

We read over at Grub Street yesterday that Black Seed bagels on Elizabeth Street is celebrating its one-year anniversary this week.

Meanwhile, as you probably know, the Black Seed owners are opening a bagel shop/cafe in the former DeRobertis Pasticceria and Caffe at 176 First Ave. near East 11th Street.

Here's a look inside the under-renovation space from Friday…

The 110-year-old DeRobertis Pasticceria and Caffe closed this past Dec. 5 after 110 years in business. Black Seed owners Noah Bernamoff and Matt Kliegman have said that they will keep as much of the original architectural elements intact as they can.

I live off of 1st Ave, and at least once a week I see an (older) person stopping and gawking at the closed DeRobertis. Usually in shock, and sadness, and enought times I hear the memories or mentions of generations having gone there. Sad times. Also hoping the "craze" won't last too long when Black Seed opens.

I appreciate the Black Seed people trying to keep as much of the original detail as they can. I am also happy this place is going to be a bagel shop and not a bar!

This place has to be aware of TS Bagels around the corner. Sure there is enough weekend line for the both of them, but not weekdays. They should accept all credit carda to pupl some of the market.

Last I checked we live in America. No need to kowtow to competitors. If you're concerned about other bagel shops, then don't patronize this one.

2015, the year of the bagel.Perhaps explaining the healthier figures on the sidewalk? The druggie years were easier for sidewalk navigation, as the kids weighed 100 pds each, even when they walked in three's I could pass.

When they say "architectural elements", I think they mean walls and support beams. I bet they'll gut the interior.

Looks like they got rid of the awful fluorescent lighting from the 1970s.
