A scene today in Tompkins Square Park via EVG contributor Derek Berg ... a resident humanely caught a rat in her apartment... and released it into the wilds of Tompkins Square Park...

Rats do not need to be captured humanely. They are a pestilence which should be eradicated.

I hope the Hawks get it!!

Anonymous @ 7:52 PM - How would you "eradicate" the rat? Cervical dislocation, perhaps? Personally, with bare hands?

I confess to being disappointed with EV's readers today. Is that all you've got guys/gals? The scene is intrinsically humorous and surreal. The trap is squeaky clean. The human looks prepped for surgery. And finally here is the youtube instructional video for the trap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89O_7ax0YYo

obviously this humane person does not have a kid that plays in the park. so fun to see the rats darting in and out of the playground. Kill them all I say.

Do you have a better picture of the person releasing the rat? If, so, please post it. I'd like to report her to the NYPD. Seriously.

Rats reproduce very quickly to the level of the food source and not much beyond by, among other strategies, eating their own young. So adding to the rat population makes little difference and evens out in time. At most you might find them more visible temporarily before the invisible hand of their free market kicks in (-;

People have taken this "humane" thing too far.

I like rats better than most of the residents of the East Village these days. Go rats!

You guys sound so ridiculous- Think of the children!!! Really? There are already rats all over, she doesn't want to kill a living creature so she is releasing it where his comrades already live. Report her to the cops? Yeah a serious crime is happening. Anyway the hawk needs fresh victims.

If she was truly humane she would have lived with it instead of foisting her problems on someone else.
