This is the official word this afternoon from the dessert/bake shop's Facebook page:
After 26 years, our East Village store will close this Sunday, March 9. But you can still enjoy your favorite Black Hound New York treats. For our NYC-based customers, you can order for pick-up by appointment at our Greenpoint bakery and for local messenger delivery. We’ll still be shipping with UPS throughout the continental USA. We hope to open another retail shop in NYC in the near future. We’ll continue connecting with you through Facebook, emails, friends@blackhoundny.com, 800.344.4417, and www.blackhoundny.com. Thanks to our loyal customers and friends for your support!
The shop is located at 170 Second Ave. near East 11th St.

I remember when they opened their original location on First Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets. Sad to see them go. I assume it was the too damn high rent that forced yet another longtime EV establishment to close its doors.
Nooo! I get their tiny cakes for every holiday/birthday. They have the most wonderful orange cheesecake. Sigh.
Wow. A business that's been working for 26 years. I'd love to hear if it's rent... or people eating a bit more healthy that was the main cause.
This was my go-to place for special cakes. At least we can look forward to another dollar sliceteria.
They have always been a place to go for the perfect cake. Just small enough to enjoy without much guilt left behind.
A New York Treasure, that will be sadly missed.
The Black Hound is great, but I live in the building and they were having a really tough time with their rent....
That is really too bad! I have also followed them from 1st Avenue. Their truffles and small cakes have graced many a gift bag and dinner party, very nice holiday gifts. Something special without a too crazy price. Really sorry to see them go.

We're in NYC here - not LA...
NOOOOOO! What do you want me to buy now to celebrate special occasions, a goddamn apple pie from McDonalds? I'll really miss this place.
"or people eating a bit more healthy that was the main cause."
Why all the froyo and cupcake shops and barbeque joints then? Also, what about all the bars and the need to get a liquor license for new "startups" sprouting in the EV.
If Blackhound can't make rent in the EV, I guess only the ultra lux places can.
Terrible, terrible, terrible news. Their delicious window is a ray on sunshine on the otherwise vapid hellscape of 2nd Ave.
In other news, I think Twister Frozen Yogurt has closed its doors. I've walked past the past two nights and it was closed. Maybe Black Hound is expanding its operations and moving into Twister's old digs??????
I officially hate everyone and everything. Blackhound was a treasure. Stupid suburbanite invaders prefer bakery chains run by clueless robots. And as for eating healthier Anon, it was not a place you ate from daily, but a magnificent treat to savor. I'm happy my friends didn't communicate for my birthday dinner this year, I was given TWO Blackhound cakes!!
This SUCKS!!!!!!!
Oh no...how will I survive birthdays without the Busy Bee cake? The ne plus ultra of sweets.
This is very sad news! We were just discussing over a dinner with friends last week how Black Hound is the best pastry shop downtown (and probably one of the best in the city). Very sad. What will we do without Busy Bee cake???

I'm the one who mentioned wondering if it was "healthier" eating that helped caused the demise.
Sounds like it was mainly a rent thing. Sad, definitely.
btw - many people THINK that the frozen yogurt things are relatively healthy. They're wrong, but they think that.
Sad to see this fancy cake/dessert place go...
I swear, I had a feeling this was coming. I don't know why.
I can never pass by that window without stopping to look.
When they were on 1st Ave, they are where I had the first (real) chocolate truffle I had ever tried.
They actually had a chocolate-raisin truffle. They were in the shape of like a 2" long square match-stick. But they didn't make them for very long. To this day that's the best truffle I've ever had.
1st Ave between 10th & 11th ? I don't remember them being there. Are you sure you're not thinking of Black Forest, aka Something Sweet ?
Well. This sucks. Condolences from Big Gay Ice Cream, and we hope your mail-order business thrives.
Black Hound was closer to 10th Street, but quite a long time ago.
Black Hound started in the storefont on 1st avenue just north of 9th Street that after they left turned into Flor's and then the fried chicken place (whose name I can't remember but I loved their food) and then This Little Piggie.
Damn. I love their cakes...and I like stopping into the store to pick them out. Glad they're still going to be in business, though it'll be less convenient to do that delivery thing.
This is such sad news. I have been going to Blackhound since they first opened. For 26 years, I have been buying their assorted chocolate truffles in the mini shaker boxes as the perfect gift to bring a host when invited to a dinner party. I loved that I got to choose from a selection of pretty colored tissues to stuff festively in the bag. It was such a classy and special gift, economical and glamorously decadent at the same time. I hope they are able to come back to the neighborhood. And I also hope EV Grieve keeps us updated on the location of where they eventually end up. Greenpoint is too far for me to be able to visit.... so sad.... They will be greatly missed... I thank them for the many smiles they put on my friend's faces (and my own) over the years...
They used to be the only game in town and then 10 other dessert/bakery shops opened within a 5 block radius. BH never changed their product line-up, their display window was completely neglected...even their front door didn't work very well. You can't rest on your laurels for years and expect to stay in business. The rent wasn't the problem, the revenue was the problem, and that's on them.
Damn it! What's left?! My favorite guilty pleasure, chocolate raspberry cake with vanilla icecream. I'm sure to miss it! Good by East Village hello suburban mall
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, this is the worst news ever.
I also followed BH from it's First Avenue Days to it's current location.
The Triple Mousse Cake - sublime.
I'm shattered. And my bakery friends and best friends are shattered. Once there were 'competing cakes' at a birthday party and the black hound cake won hands down.
doug. can you hire the cute guy that worked at black hound. he's there on the weekends in the evenings ... heh. :x
I loved the lemon mousse tart and the.little samples! Best confectioners shop in the the village and in the xity!!
I just found this almost a year later! I moved years ago- but I used to work at the 1st ave location. Not just phenomenal treats. but good people to boot. So sad. I hope they continue to thrive despite the loss of the latest Manhattan storefront. They do something very special. XOXO
