Back in February, workers at the scene told EVG contributor Stacie Joy that a cafe-coffee shop was in the works for the space, though they didn't have the business name.
Well, based on recent façade additions, 200 Allen St. Watchers© figure the business name will be El Churro...
We'll see!
As for the past, Eastanbul Gyro Kebab and Smyrna Bakery closed here last fall. Empire Gyro, with a 24/7 schedule, opened here in February 2019 ... with the conversion to Eastanbul (and Smyrna) in the summer of 2020. The space was previously Sugar Cafe for 10 years.
And because someone will mention it! Economy Foam (and later, & Futon) anchored the corner from 1937 to 2003.

Heck I'll be the one to mention it. I LOVED that Economy Foam store and marvel all of the time how Developers/Architects took that Block long Allan-street side of basically nothingness and made 5 or 6 Large and Highly Lucrative (to the Landlord) Retail stores out of nothing but a SOLID Brick Wall.

Well since Churrería El Moro is in Mexico City and since Manhattan is lamentably short of real churros y chocolate, I for one don't care if it IS a knock-off! Bring it on!
I'm wondering how they legally got away with widening the already existing extension. Now there's basically no room left for two way foot traffic anymore.

I had the same thought. The font is very similar.
@10:23 I am hoping that's just the construction plywood and that it's not that wide. But with the city letting restaurants do whatever they want (Boulton Watt's entire sidewalk owning outdoor cafe!) I wouldn't be surprised.
