Report: Armed robber takes hedge-fund manager's $26k Rolex

The Daily News reports that an armed robber took a $26,000 Rolex from a hedge-fund portfolio manager who was bar hopping in the East Village early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred on East Second Street near Second Avenue about 2:15 a.m. when a man approached the 33-year-old victim and showed him the butt of a gun. The robber also took $200 in cash, according to the News.

This is why I prefer to wear my Canal Street Rolex when I'm bar-hopping, and leave my real Rolex in the vault.

Maybe don't wear a 26k watch out in public especially at 2 am?

He was wearing a 26k Rolex? Fund must not be doing too well.

It was bought with other people's money so no big loss.

I prefer my $26k Swatch thank you very little!

He probably ordered another one right after it happened and it was waiting for him when he got home.

He has an expensive watch and he still didn't know what time it is.

and this use to be a safe neighborhood. (a quote from a 20something last year).

Being out at 2AM in the East Village on a Saturday with something worth stealing on your person is not a crime. Armed robbery is a crime.

Twenty-six thousand dollares!?!?

But can it take a licking and keep on ticking?

An easy target for people on this space, a millennial with a rolex. Easy for those who feel the EV belongs to them, to blame the victim. Shame!!! Unless there is more specific information that leads down a different path, we should all be concerned about armed robbery. Would the snideness be the same if the victim were a young man or woman (leaving the Rolex out of the story)?

You can't fix stupid, especially when stupid was also probably drunk.

Like polishing a turd.

Interesting to see that people are more concerned with putting down millenials than some thug threatening people with a gun. That's fine, apparently. Outrage is reserved for things like somebody wanting to open a coffee shop or yogurt stand.

Anonymous said...

Please show more compassion folks: This could have been anyone of us wearing a $26k watch.

Anonymous said...

Nice victim blaming.

Anonymous said...

Anon 3:24: Prior to your comment no one mentioned the victim's age nor which generation they belonged to.

I thought millennials were broke and stacked ten deep in apartments they can't afford.

Two criminals meeting in one criminal's home turf.

Hedge fund guy wins plenty on his turf.

Is a 33 year old a "millenial"? I thought millenials were in their 20's.

Anonymous said...

Bullshit! This sounds like such a insurance scam.

Anonymous said...

@3:55pm: This has nothing to do with millenials; it could have happened to a 45-year-old wearing a Rolex. But note that the thug in question (and I hope they catch the guy) was NOT targeting a Timex-wearer.

The person flashing the Rolex (and that is, after all, the whole POINT of owning a Rolex: to get people to notice you're wearing a Rolex) showed poor judgment in wearing it that night. Same way a woman wearing a flashy diamond necklace shouldn't be doing that while bar-hopping in the East Village - unless there's a security guard standing alongside.

Shame on thief, shame on victim for being extremely materialistic. Shame on both for different reasons. Wearing 26k around one's wrist is greed and vanity nothing else.

Anonymous said...

@5:45pm: True!

I'd never trust a hedge fund manager who would wear a 26k watch at 2:15AM in this neighborhood, or any neighborhood for that matter. Indicates extremely bad judgement.

Shaming the victim for wearing an expensive rolex is like shaming a beautiful woman for wearing a short skirt...

Geez. People aren't allowed to flash guns and steal shit. What difference does it make how much the watch cost? If someone is driving around in a $26,000 Toyota at 2 am in the east village, is it her fault if she is car jacked? I wish for all of your $500 fancy phones to be lifted at gun point. Peace

PS: That's why I only wear my Patek Phillipe on sunny Sundays between 11AM and 1 PM

If this was a woman and a wedding ring I bet people wouldn't be shaming the victim

Anonymous said...

@7:00pm: You have got your comparison and your priorities very, very mixed up.

@7:12pm: A married woman with a very "bling" wedding ring would not likely be found bar-hopping in the East Village for Santacon.

Oh Please....
Not condoning the crime, but if you lose a $40 Swatch, you lose a $40 Swatch.

PS: Nobody is shaming anybody...just pointing out stupid decisions. You live and learn.

I’m a Casio guy myself. But serious, the guy with the gun could hit on any of us. Always stay alert while out and about at night and DON’T Zombie smart phone walk. Rather obvious but I see these common sense precautions violated all the time.

i left my rolex in my condo. i dropped it in my uber. it wasn't my rolex, it was my rolodex. my apple watch called my rolex but it was a wrong number so i screened the call. i left my credit card at the bar and they ran up my tab, maxed out, so i went back to ridgewood.

Would this have happened if he was wearing an 80s calculator watch? I think not, my friends. I think not.

:)

If it's a hedge-fund manager, the $28k watch was a decoy. He prudently left his (more) expensive watch at home.

It's really great that they don't offer any description of the robber.

And any word on security cameras in the area?

An armed robbery at 2nd and Second sucks. More than decent school on that corner. Let's keep our neighborhood safe.

Wow, I paid 7 bucks for my Canal Street Polex. It turned out to be a real Polex.

Theft is theft. Did anyone even express concerns for the victim? He was robbed with a gun! What a bunch of heartless and judgemental people here.

Anonymous said...

C'mon like none of you have not been robbed by gunpoint. I only lost $7 though, I hide my weeks pay in my sock that evening.

I don't think anyone is saying it is a good thing this guy got robbed but not many of us have too much sympathy for someone dumb enough to be out at that time wearing such an expensive piece of jewelry. It is most likely insured, he did not get hurt, he will have a good bragging story to tell his less rich friends, "Did I tell you about the time I was in ghetto and my expensive........"

COTD!

@12:37am: I have as much concern for the victim as the victim & all the other Santacon revelers have concern for the peace and quiet of this neighborhood.

The whole trick of surviving down here in the early 70s was.....you looked like the guy they were afraid was going to rob them. 45 years and counting.
The last time I got accosted, maybe 1972 or 73...I had a beautiful switchblade in my pocket. I pulled it out and told him: "Looks like one of us is gonna die tonight. Might be me, might be you. He ran!
Just another EV story from the 70s.
