That was then

[East 6th Street]

Though the years, Gregoire Alessandrini has shared some early 1990s photos of the city with us... (like here ... and here).

He recently added another set to his blog — New York in the 1990's Photo Archives.

Here are a few of the East Village-related shots...

[East 13th Street]

[East Houston]

[7th and B]

[10th Street and Avenue A]

Check out the rest of the set here.

The usual background: As a student here in the early-to-mid 1990s, Alessandrini always carried a camera around with him ... and he has been uploading the photos from that time to his blog. He lives in Paris these days.

As MTA fares keep going up, that last photo of the bus may very well be in our future.

OMG I remember that "Please Hide Your Drugs" notice, had forgotten all about it. Hilarious. On my block, among other places, the dealers used to stash their wares in car bumpers - this was when they were separate elements instead of aerodynamically built into the body - and I recall one time when a guy came out of a building, got into his car, started it up, and drove away, blissfully unaware of the excess weight he was carrying. The dealer, suddenly realizing what was happening, raced down the street after him screaming for him to stop, caught up with him at the red on 11th and A and grabbed the bag, after which the driver continued on; I'm not even sure he realized what had just happened. Thanks, Mr. Alessandrini, for the photos and the wistful memories they engender. Such treasures.

Oh boy, honey, the exact location? You're talking a quarter century ago! I have a vague memory of it being Ludlow, since for whatever reason that was the street I most used when traversing the LES, but I cannot be 100% certain. And that whole area has been so gutted, rebuilt, rehabbed, and "improved" that I am no longer sure those buildings even exist anymore. So sorry I can't help...

Looks like we might soon enjoy a return to the days before every building was f**king luxury housing.

That hide your drugs elsewhere sign is See Squat (155 Ave C).

I used to buy weed from that area in the 90's.

The only bad thing seeing these great photos is the reminder of LIVE's horrible alternative rock music

That 'Please Hide Your Drugs' message worked! Now, the yuppies and trustfunders and hipsters are having their drugs delivered via Uber-esque service and consuming in their lux condos.
