Paint splattering van vandals strike again

Back in January, we noted the above on East Seventh Street near Avenue A... at the time, we weren't sure if it was some kind of van-owner-created art... or vandalism. (Turned out to be vandalism, or whatever you'd like to call throwing paint bombs at vans.)

Fast-forward to yesterday... a resident reports the following...

"This is my van and I found the lovely work this morning. Odd thing is that I moved the van into that spot at 4:30 am and didn't notice it when I left on foot at 11 am."

The resident discovered the splatter upon returning three hours later.

"The paint was still warm and came off a bit when I came back at 2:15 pm. The police [officer] said he noticed it earlier and was wondering if that was intentional. (Ha! No.)

Such a pain in the ass."

Maybe the substation across the street has some video footage.

And I hear oven cleaner works pretty well for removing paint.

There's a Citibike station across teh street with a camera. Perhaps they can check the video.

The kids who do this are not buying the paint, they're taking paint that was not disposed of properly from the curb. Most people in NYC don't know that you're not supposed to put cans of usable paint out for trash pickup and are supplying the vandals. Form the NYC sanitation site:
paint (latex) in metal or rigid plastic can or bucket
For non-dried out latex (water-based/acrylic) paint, look for reuse options, or take to household special waste drop-off site or upcoming DSNY SAFE disposal events. To discard as trash, remove lid and let paint dry, or use kitty litter, newspaper, or other absorbent material to soak up paint. If can is empty, recycle with metal, glass, plastic & cartons.

How in the world does 2:30 possibly know where these mutts are getting their paint? And certainly those colors look nothing at all like the whites, greys, and other subtle housepainting colors that one sees thrown out in the garbage.
Nonsense.

Probably perpetrated by the same fanatical, car-hating crowd that defaced the roadway on 6th Avenue in midtown this past weekend.

It's actually my van. After a little sleuthing I came across this blog and their previous report from January.

Definitely not paint found on the corner. I was able to follow paint drops on the ground back across the street to what was probably the trunk of their car parked in front of the power station.

Funny thing is all my friends have mentioned they like it. While I appreciate art in many forms as a photographer, I don't appreciate it splattered all over my vehicle without my consent. I was able to get some of it off but it's going to take a full day of work to remove it. Sigh.. Like anyone has time?

Amazing that I've lived on this block for 13 years and have never had any issues with any vehicles I've parked out front.

Although I was assaulted once in front of Sidewalk by 5 guys for their amusement (they took nothing) but that's a different story.
