Santa Barbara Deli Superette will return with a shorter name

The plywood is down at the Santa Barbara Deli Superette, which closed here on Avenue B and East 12th Street in early September.

Looking pretty spiffy... the owners said they were giving the space a top-to-bottom makeover... which will apparently include a shorter name ...

It's a rather perplexing make-over. I don't know what to make of it really. That stonework, and that large window. I just don't know.

Yeah, I really hate it when business owners spend money on pretty stonework and new windows handicap access!

I am glad they are able to afford the makeover and stay in business. We don't have many of these places left in the neighborhood. I will miss the word Superette, though. I wish they had just called it Superette!

I got to check out the inside and the place looks twice as large as before. I congratulated the owner on the renovation and am glad this very nice family business will continue. I give them lots of credit for realizing they needed upscale their business to appeal to the changing neighborhood. In the evenings the places gets traffic from people dining at one of the many restaurants on Ave B between 10th and 12th streets. The new apartment building kitty corner from them is finally coming together. I know we lose some old neighborhood charm and grit when places like this get a makeover but the important thing is the store owners will remain which is what a neighborhood is all about.

I agree with the person who posted at 11:28. It's great to see existing business owners staying in the neighborhood. I look forward to patronizing the renovated space as soon as it opens again.

I liked the place as it was. It is smart to make it more appealing to people who aren't used to going to a bodega.

I don't agree with the new stone facade. Impossible to restore once it gets graffiti'ed.
