A bad sign at Akina Sushi

In early June, we noted that Akina Sushi had been dark in recent weeks at 424 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and First Avenue.

The restaurant had a lot of fans, some of whom were hopeful for a return here.

Unfortunately, a 14-day rent demand was recently taped to the vacant storefront... noting that a total sum of $149,337.80 for rent, late fees "and other permissible charges" is due on or before July 22... at which time the landlord will "commence summary proceedings" to recover the space.

Akina Sushi opened here in December 2008.

Thanks to Steven for the photo.

We were regular delivery customers of Akina. Then we decided to actually eat there. All seemed okay until one of us went to use the restroom. The signage there made it clear that all used toilet paper should not go in the toilet — instead it was to go into a trash bin. We stopped being customers of Akina after that.

This was my go to Sushi place, unlike some I have nothing negative to say about it. I will miss them.

Zoinks! That was our go-to sushi place!

Believe it or not it’s a common custom in the Far East—Korea and Japan. It’s leftover from the years before indoor plumbing—mostly false belief that pipes will get clogged. Not sure why it was offensive to you.

There are many buildings in the EV that have old plumbing that can’t take TP and requests by landlords (and sometimes in the lease) that a poop box or waste receptacle for used TP is used… having lived in many countries south of the border it’s not a foreign idea…

I spent over a couple of years in Japan and I was never asked to discard soiled bathroom tissue outside the toilet bowl.
In fact most places have electronic washlets, including the combini stores.
Unlike here where most everyone has a dirty derrier!
