The 9th Precinct will add bicycle patrols to the East Village

The 9th Precinct recently announced that officers will soon be canvassing the East Village on bicycles.

There have been calls to get more officers to patrol their communities via bicycle, such as in this Streetsblog op-ed from last July. Per Jeremy Posner: "Just as NYPD officers are being asked to get out of their cars more often as part of community policing, they should experience cycling on the streets they police."

In the summer of 2020, Bike New York called on the NYPD to put more officers on bicycles to improve community policing, among other items.

This is great news. Hopefully we can get more cops on the beat generally in the city. Get them walking, driving, and biking. Just make them omnipresent. Maybe we can slow down the dangerous crime (see the SA from yesterday) and all of the antisocial behavior

Let’s see if they stay in the bike lanes!

I think the 9th misunderstood. We want to see them walking the hood, not so much biking it. But I guess when this was first proposed -- oh, 15 years ago -- it's about on time -- for the NYPD.

If they are serious about this, and not just using this for promotion, they'll need to upgrade their bike inventory as well. What they have (from the photo) seems to have been dusted off from the 1970s stock.

But at least they wont be idling in their SUVs checking their phones.

they'll still park illegally, out of habit

ANY additional police presence is welcome- crime in the East Village is out of control!

Personally, I would like to see more cops on the street, and I would like those cops to be looking at what's going on around them (and not only on devices).

Brilliant. I love a man in a uniform especially riding a bike.

The city council plans on downsizing the NYPD. Officers are retiring and not being replaced. Soon they will only respond to 911 calls as there won't be enough officers for patrols.

But as long as local electeds and CB3 continue to admonish & browbeat NYPD at every turn then you aren’t going to see change. Officers aren’t going to go the distance if Councilwoman Carlina Rivera, Assemblyman Harvey Epstein & CB3 don’t have their back.

Need more police presence in the EV. Even as a man, i get nervous walking around and seeing groups of young men eyeing you down. Can't imagine what women feel.

Funny how the "defund the police" movement has gotten so quiet over the past year as crime across the city and the nation is at an all time high. We need police, period.

@9:06 get over it already! They are pulled over to the side of the road. If there is a bike lane there, so be it! It's still the side of the road. When I bike, I look, and then go around it. If you can't handle this, don't bike in a city like New York with a million things going on.

I wonder what “bicycle trained” entails

"crime across the city and the nation is at an all time high"

This is bogus. It's a right wing/NY Post/MAGA talking point. Random crime (perps don't know the victim) and hate crimes have increased in a major way (still not at record level) but overall crime is still not at the 90's level (NYC overall) or the EV (70's). BTW, NYC homicides have decreased year to date versus 2021.

Thank you 9th precinct for keeeping us safe!

@annonymous 1:42 , go do some research before commenting. Ridiculous that you literally don’t see a rise in crime over the last several years. The facts and data are there to support it. don’t be blind.

@11:41am: Let me suggest, outrageously, that all members of the NYPD should do their job and do it well, NO MATTER whether or if various politicos or community boards "have their back".

The definition of professionalism is that you do your job and you do it well BECAUSE that's what you signed up for. You do your job well because you have self-respect and maturity. You don't get pissy & passive-aggressive just b/c someone doesn't like you; that's juvenile behavior.

CHARACTER is what you do & who you are when no one else is watching. We need the NYPD to be professionals: to be who they are supposed to be, and to live up to the oath they take, whether or not politicos are patting them on the back.

And CB3 can all go jump in the East River, b/c they're pretty useless across the board. There's so much hot air there, they are probably a significant contributor to climate warming in this area.

Grateful to the 9th Precinct for thinking outside the box (er outside the police car) in trying to thwart crime. Bicycles will enable them to cover more ground than on foot but still be close to the public.

Can't believe I'm saying this about an NYPD move but this is awesome. A fit, strong person on a bike is a mighty resource.

I hope they ticket the massive amount of bicycles, scooters, and motorcycles that go speeding through red lights in this high traffic pedestrian area.
