Workers quickly start dismantling roof of historic 315 E. 10th St.

So, as you probably know... yesterday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) unanimously voted to create the East 10th Street Historic District.

Preservation groups had urged the LPC to move quickly after learning that developer Ben Shaoul of Magnum Management was planning a rooftop addition to 315 E. 10th St., which would change the aesthetic of the street.

Anyway, as it turned out, the DOB OK'd the necessary permits for Shaoul hours before the LPC hearing.

Per Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, in a statement: "It's truly a shame that these city agencies could not coordinate their effort to prevent this from happening."

As the Post noted today:

EV Grieve reader Jose Garcia just passed along this photo showing workers dismantling the chimney...

As Jose said in a comment this morning:

They've certainly not wasted any time getting started. their crew was up there at 8:30 this morning demolishing the chimneys. a very nice wakeup call.

I HATE Santa Claus! That pesky liberal gift giver! Who needs a chimney, this is the 20th century! We have regular heat now.

And 8:30AM is nothing, my workers are from Mehixco where its like 4PM their time so its like they are sleeping in when they get here.

No problemo!

This is really rotten on the developer's part and un-bloody-believable on the part of municipal administration.

Where is ICE when you need them. Someone should call Ray Kelly and tell him its actually OccupyWallStreet up there - it will be shut down by 100 cops in minutes. Its CITIZENS LAST folks under these transnationalist skum...

Man what a real turd this guy Shaoul is. Unbelievable. Make way for the blank-eyed worshippers of the dollar.

does anyone know shaoul's home address? perhaps we can make his life miserable too. in an entirely legal fashion of course....

Why not get the LPC to RESCIND the demo permit, based on its recent decision?

Shaol is a real shit....

You know, Shaoul really is a shit, but don't blame him for this. This is DOB and LPC's fault (ie, "arrangement")

Disgusting that the city is allowing this to happen. Really, it's a coincidence that the permit was approved hours before the district? I think not. Smells like dirty NYC politics at its worst.

Hours, huh? The fix was in. LPC dragged its feet just long enough that Shaoul got what he wanted and they got to tell preservation groups that there is now an E 10th Street Historic District.

@Ken...

Exactly.
