An EVG reader who lives on East Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B shared this story about a young tree on the south side of the street … late Saturday night, "there was still a living tree there, and a bike stupidly locked to it."
And then yesterday morning?
The tree was basically snapped and half… and the bike was gone…
"Unbelievable; that tree was doing so well until someone thought it was a good idea to destroy it to steal an old bike," said the reader. "What an awful loss to our block."

This is sad. We finally get some new trees and some idiot has to lock a bike to the tree and then some other idiot has to destroy the tree to steal the bike.
put cameras on the block. that has stopped so much crap from happening on mine.

In an ideal world the idiot whose bike was stolen would have to pay for replacing the tree...but I have a sad feeling that while he was dumb enough to lock his bike to a tree, he probably has enough of a self-preservation instinct to keep his mouth shut and not admit to doing this.
locking bikes to trees is illegal in NYC, and apparently with good reason. get a good lock and chain up to street sign/bike rack and this will never happen.

We need a lot more dedicated bike racks on the streets.
There is a camera on the building to the right; this must have gotten recorded.
I remember the neighbors would have taken the bike, tree and person's money/life. What do you expect from a bicyclist?
I so long for the old days when crime was rampant in the east village.
Last week I saw a youngish man struggling to get his bike out of the tree pit and over the little iron fence while being reprimanded by one of our block supers for chaining his bike to the tree. This kid didn't flinch and it seemed certain he would do it again. Luckily this super has a fantastic saw that would cut any chain right through and I'm hoping he'll use it now that the kid has been warned.

As a bike rider, I am happy the city has added more bike racks. There is one on almost every corner. Locking to a tree should not happen.
