The 22nd annual Tree Lighting at Tompkins Square Park is Sunday

From 4-5 Sunday… details are on the flyer below...

[Bobby Williams]

The tree was planted in 1992 in memory of Park advocate Glenn Barnett, "and each of our neighbors whom we have lost to AIDS," per the sign that hangs near the tree...

And here are scenes from the ceremony in 2008 ... and in 2011...

It's funny that the sign says it was planted. I remember that there had been a one foot hole where it's stands for a long time and after Xmas the park was filled with trees for chipping. A tree was tossed into the hole and a day later it was covered with dirt and took. I have run into other long term residents who also remember that. Look at the angle of the tree base, because that was the angle that the tree was put in the hole and covered. Perhaps the people planted it in honor but the sign when it appeared surprised me. Anyone else remember the hole and the little Xmas tree that could?

The first tree that was planted on that spot to honor Glenn died after several years; it was taken out and nothing was replanted for a while, maybe that is the hole Anon. 2:19 is referring to?
