Lyric Diner Coffee Shop neon survives renovation on Third Avenue

Back in August, we noted that the Lyric Diner on Third Avenue at 22nd Street had closed for renovations... Our friends at the pcvstBEE blog report that the owners reopened the space this week... it's now a Greek restaurant called Taverna.

Some good news. Despite the major renovations, the owners are keeping the cool Lyric Diner Coffee Shop neon on the East 22nd Street side, as this photo from @ThingsWendySees shows...

As for their food, you can check out their new menu here.

I love Greek food, and their menu looks good. However, I'm certainly sad to see that now one less diner exists in the city.

HUH? Its not gone..and the food is so poor you only go after hours when nothing else is open..for that I'm glad it stayed.

"Lyric" was usually the last place open when I was walking my sweetie home decades ago (she lived in Tudor City at that time). I will forever be grateful for its extending my night by an hour or so. I have no recollection of what their food tasted like...and it never was important. Thanks for the memories.

The Lyric was one of the neighborhood diners used by us SVA students as an informal meeting/student union/general hang out joint between class in the mid '80's (the other being the diner @ 23rd & 2nd, which I think is still there.) I always enjoyed the way we used the city around us as our campus extension, though I'm not sure how much these diners liked a bunch of broke art students hanging around forever on a bagel & cuppa joe for $1.50! I feel obliged to go back as an adult and make up for the tips we owe them. I was worried to see the impending renovations, but all looks ok - basic diner character in tact.

Seems like you didn't even read the 3 sentence long article (or the new menu)

This sucks. One more "quality" restaurant, one less place that actually serves a purpose in the world--providing a respite from NY streets, with approachable meals at all hours. I used to enjoy breakfasts here...
