Reader mailbag: Can you help ID that high-pitched screeching noise?

From the EV Grieve Reader Mailbag®:

Wondering if you can help identify the source of a high-pitched screeching noise coming from somewhere between East 10th and East 9th Street (back of the buildings) and First Avenue and Avenue A (seems closer to A).

A fan? An exhaust of some kind? Suri Cruise's tea kettle (is she even in the EV anymore)? [Editor's note: No]

It sounds like 'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh'

It's on for like 1 or 2 days a week for many hours at a time.

I'm trying to pinpoint the source to report the issue to 311, contact the source (or consider an unconventional approach if that becomes necessary).

Anyone? Anyone with a serious response/solution?

I'm at 435 East 9th and I agree with the exhaust fan assumption. It just turned off for, I think, the first time since yesterday evening. It reminds me of the outdoor units for central A/C set-ups. I've stuck my head into the alley to try and see the source, but nothing.

Happening right now. Anyone know where this is coming from? It's just awful.

My smartphone has an application which acts like a spectrum analyzer. It will sample sounds using its microphone, do and FFT and plot frequency and amplitude. Using this I am able to pinpoint a high pitch noise in my office to a particular power supply which I'm now getting rid of.

This non-stop high pitched sound started up again two nights ago and has not stopped since. Anyone between East 9th street and East 10th street BTW 1st Ave and Ave A (back of the bulidings) know the source of this madness inducing wailing? (no nyu or woo hoo jokes please - sadly, this is a 'quality of life' related noise request)
311 has been of no help so far so I'd like to track down the source myself with the help of fellow Grievers.
