Bank branch becomes bank branch at former site of the Fillmore East

And over on Second Avenue near East Sixth, EVG contributor peter radley notes that the Emigrant Savings Bank will become an Apple Bank starting today...

And the address had a long history as various theaters and clubs... most notably the Fillmore East...

... and here's a photo of Timothy Leary circa 1966 from its days as an off-Broadway venue:

The Emigrant Savings Bank started going up in this space in 1997...

Not sure if there are any Allman Brothers Band fans out there, but they recorded an AMAZING album there. It's called Live At the Fillmore East, it's not to well known, but it's killer. It's got an awesome 18 minute version of "Sometimes I Feel" and a sick "Man Down There" anyway...I highly recommend it.

I'm psyched the place is a bank now though. It seems like a good and convenient use for such a legendary landmark. I mean what could be more thrilling than taking money out of an ATM where Duane Allman might have once stood.

Apple Bank was owned by Stanley Stahl. Recently deceased, his family now controls this small bank. In 1998 a former partner in the bank, Abe Hirschfeld, the real estate developer, initiated a plot to murder Stahl.
Mr. Hirschfeld, former NY Post owner, was jailed. At the time of his incarceration, he claimed innocence, "Anyway, $75,000 is a lot of money to get somebody killed these days You can do it for a lot cheaper."
The prosecutor admitted: "Abe's supposed to be such a smart businessman -- he shoulda done better than that."

I hope the Filmore East/Saint photos are still up. I always meant to go in there and look at them but haven't yet.

After the Fillmore East, in the very early 80's, this place became a gay disco called "The Saint". Working nights, I used to eat next door at 103 2nd Ave. every early morning and saw many happy revelers show up at 5-6AM...Saw some funny shit.
