Updated: City temporarily closes Frank Restaurant for some BS sidewalk violation

We heard from a nervous fan of Frank Restaurant yesterday… he/she wanted to know why the Italian mainstay at 88 Second Ave. was not open yesterday or today … calls to the restaurant went unanswered… turns out the Department of Consumer Affairs temporarily closed Frank…

As we understand it, the temporary closure has to do with a sidewalk violation — something to do with the large planters outside. For that they lose a weekend of business. The place should be back open tomorrow.

Updated 1-13
BoweryBoogie has more on the temporary closure…

We were told the DOC shut down Frank for two reasons, the sidewalk fencing was “too high” and that their Christmas tree wasn’t to fire code.

You mean planters blocking the sidewalk ? Why would you characterize that as BS ?

@Anon I think he means it is BS that instead of paying a fine and being ordered to fix it, they actually had to lose a weekend of business.

Though there may be more to the story here...

new boss same as the old boss. frozen cars ticketed, a long established restaurant which pays countless taxes shuttered for the weekend. will mayor de blase yo subsidize the workers who didnt earn any money this weekend?

hows that non-tax paying halal cart faring? closed ?

I agree making them lose a weekend's worth of business is unduly harsh punishment. Having said that, the places along 2nd Avenue with outdoor seating, eg. Mary Ann's, Frank's, Haveli, Virage plus the guy selling hats and sun glasses next to Stage are occupying an ever increasing width of the sidewalk. Adding planters to shield the patrons from passersby further exacerbates the situation. As an aside, I've never seen anyone lunching / brunching / munching whose face I recognized from the neighborhood. I realize that's not a valid criteria, just a personal observation. As always, some of you may disagree with me.

PS: I never understood the allure of al fresco dining 10 - 15 feet from busy 2nd Avenue traffic.

Planters are fine, the city thought the plants they added made them higher than the 48 inch limit, still BS
