Pinche Taqueria has apparently closed on Lafayette

An EVG reader noted that there aren't any signs of life over at Pinche Taqueria, the West Coast-style Mexican restaurant on Lafayette and Bleecker...

Eater noted the possible closure last evening, hearing from a neighbor that a rent increase may be the reason behind the (sudden) departure. The locations on Mott Street and West 14th Street preceded this one in closing.

In 2008, the Times called Pinche's fish tacos "textbook-perfect."

That sucks. They had some of the best, most inexpensive tacos in lower Manhattan. I loved when it was warm out. You could sit on the sidewalk and people watch. Probably another boring chain found in the midwest. :(

A place that's busy all the time can't afford the rent?!? How much further is this insanity going to go.

You'd think that landlords would be smart (as if): You'd think they'd try to keep rent reasonable as not to price stores out. If we shop in stores, the stores stay open and the LL gets rent. If they price them out or the stores have to raise prices extremely high in order to be able to pay the rent, people shop more online, and the spaces go empty. Like all capitalists, LL's don't think medium or long term. It's all about making the most profit right now.

We really liked this place, but liked this corner more when it was just open space. You could actually see the 6 train entrance.

But, what I will never forget about this place was: one night, eating outside and telling Barbara that I was too full to finish my meal. A young and otherwise normal couple walking by overheard me, and out of the blue, the guy asked if he could finish it for me. Flummoxed, I said "sure". And the guy proceeded to eat the rest of my dinner as his female friend walked on. We even gave him a bit more to eat as he left to catch up with the woman. I love nyc.
