Ellis looking to bring comfort food to 6th Street

A bar-restaurant called Ellis serving American comfort food is in the works for 503 E. Sixth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

A group of applicants are on this month's CB3-SLA agenda for a new liquor license for the address.

According to the questionnaire on file for public viewing at the CB3 website (PDF here), the establishment has proposed hours of 2 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Friday, with opening hours of 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The configuration shows 11 tables seating 48 guests and a bar with 15 stools.

The sample menu for Ellis on the questionnaire features a variety of salads and sandwiches, categorized under Smaller Plates and Larger Plates...



The applicants have operated a handful of bars, including the Trading Post on John Street in the Financial District and the Globe on 23rd Street. Closer to home, the applicants also own Solas on Ninth Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue, which regularly serves as a main stop during SantaCon.

Cholo Noir, the Chicano-inspired bar-restaurant, went out of business here last August, first with handwritten notes indicating the trusty "closed for renovations." They never reopened after 13 months at the address.

The CB3 committee is Monday night at 6:30. Location: the Public Hotel, 17th Floor, Sophia Room, 215 Chrystie St. between Houston and Stanton.

Seriously? Why bother. I walk down sixth street every other day. It won't stand a chance seeing as there isn't a lot of foot traffic or destinations. Most places are lucky to survive past six months. I lost count of all the businesses on this street that have closed or have simply disappeared because they could afford rent or the salaries of their staff.

In our current climate, if I were the owners, I would pass and invest in something else. I would never open a restaurant even if I had the capital and support. NEVER! As someone whom spent over twenty years of my life in NYC hospitality as a waiter, bartender and manager, I have seen most everything from an owners perspective. The stress and anxiety levels of operating a restaurant are VERY high. It's just not worth it. It will destroy your relationships, your personal life and perpetually empty ALL of your savings. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but I just don't see this succeeding. My two cents.

A $14 Grilled Cheese. Please. Price points in this city are absolutely absurd.

Can't wait! Been dreaming about a place where I can spend $14 on a Grilled Cheese and $16 on a BLT since about...never.

Solas is a horribly-run place with a long long history of neighborhood complaints. Opposing this place with everything I got. Of course, I can't attend because of a previous engagement, but I'll be sending letters to CB3.
