A new pizzeria is coming soon to 221 Avenue A between 13th Street and 14th Street. Signage arrived on Friday for Burrata Pizza
With Burrata's arrival, this officially marks the end of Muzzarella Pizza, which quietly closed early last summer.
Muzzarella, which opened here in 1991, had many fans who appreciated their low-key, unpretentious vibe and solid slices and menu offerings like the meatball hero.

I remember the Muzz cat around 98' that always hung around. Best Sicilian slices at the time.

My heart is now officially broken. I just loved that place, and even though my brain knew better, my ticker kept hoping they would somehow magically re-open, maybe when we got to 50% dining the way Little Poland has promised to do...
I'll miss them too. That was my go to joint for many, many years.
There's another pizzeria nearby which was supposed to open known as Sal's on 14th between Ave A and B towards B. I've not seen them open and they are closed with a metal roll up gate.
The world just kind of passed Muzzerella by. It was unpretentious, but so are most pizza shops. Bakers down the street does a much better slice at the same price -- the few times I tried to give Muzz the benefit of the doubt recently, the slices just weren't that good.
I'm hoping for a better slice at this new spot, with a similar Muzz vibe. Good luck Burrata Pizza crew
End of an era, I used to go there every Saturday for years, cheapest calzones in the EV, best slices and Sicilian - - The chicken tomato slices were off the charts good.
Thanks John and Celeste! We miss you. You brightened up the block when you arrived in the early ‘90s. And you helped to keep me fed when my kitchen had been sacrificed for a darkroom (you, Benny’s, Dok Suni, Miracle Grill, and La Focacceria, in rotation). Loved those veggie baked ziti. Wishing you and your sons all the best!
Muzzarella had the best normal slice in the city. Not pretentious, not a dollar slice. Just a regular slice of pizza that was damn good. We're losing a bunch of our old neighborhood places this year... it's really sad

That was the best slice west of 4th ave. Friendly, tasty and quick. That stretch of Ave A is not going to be the same. I always loved that photo they had of the blizzard of 96 on the wall.
Any info on why they closed? I wish I could have had one last slice.

Any updates about how/where Mr. Muzzerella are? a neighbor and I were wondering the other day about him, and hoping he's ok.
