With sale of building, the Central Bar signs off after nearly 20 years on 9th Street

The Central Bar, the bi-level sports bar-lounge at 109 E. Ninth St. between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue, has closed.

Ownership made the announcement back on March 18 via Instagram. (Thanks to MP for the photo!)

Per the notice: "Our landlord has sold the building and the new owners will not be keeping us as tenants."

The note goes on to thanks patrons for nearly 20 years of patronage.

The sale hasn't hit public records just yet.

Some years back, the address was home to Pageant Book & Print Shop, and its storefront served as a location for Neil Simon's "Chapter Two" and Woody Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters."
And you can now find Pageant Print Shop at 69 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and the Bowery.

And I still have books on my shelves that I bought at Pageant. Greatly missed. The only memories I have of Central Bar (actually didn't know that was its name) is walking through the smokers blocking the sidewalk and having pity for its upstairs neighbors.

Central was a great neighborhood joint. Friendly staff, great trivia game, good music, and a chill attitude. You will be missed.

Wasn't the same after the renovations but still was a good spot to hit for a pint on the way home from work. It will be missed.

In my dreams, the Pageant Book & Print Shop would reclaim the space!

Was one of the only places in New York where I've ever encountered an anti-gay comment. (From staff!) Was only there once and always stung when I walked by after that. Must've been in 2010, or so. Hopefully not a comment on the entire place, but who knows. Best of luck to its people.

Twenty years from now no one will be thinking longingly about this sports bar, as we do for the bookshop that they displaced. Way too many bars have displaced our neighborhood essentials. So I’m not sad one bit to see this one go.

I am so glad to see this happen. The bar was nothing short of constant noise and croweded sidewalks. GLAD TO SEE YOU GO.....BYE BYE!!!!

It had become a fixture of the neighborhood, whether you liked or disliked the rowdy crowds outside especially during Santa con, st pats, etc...It was during one of these that I had to explain to my 7 year old why somebody would be dressed up as a bad Santa and throwing up on the sidewalk. I am worried about what is going to replace it. Better the devil you know and good luck to the staff. They had been there for a while
