Gas problem in building has temporarily closed Stromboli and Dan & John's

Stromboli Pizza and Dan & John's Wings have been forced to temporarily close for the past week... signs on the two quick-serve businesses note emergency repairs...
We're told that there's a gas-line issue with the building at 83 St. Mark's Place/135 First Ave. The retail tenants are waiting for an update from the landlord. We're told that the gas issue impacts the building's residents as well.

Meanwhile, one neighbor took the opportunity to leave a note on Stromboli's front door reading: "Stay closed. You're [sic] neighbors sleep better without you."
Neighbors have complained about the raucous early-morning scene at the longtime pizzeria.

Thanks to Steven for the photos and reporting.

"Gas issue" usually translates to months and months of closure.

this neighborhood's infrastructure is a complete disaster for small businesses. they best fix the situation or there will be an east village riot like the good old days. :)

What a jerk neighbor. You live on the corner of St Marks and First Ave and expect quiet?? That's rich.

Stromboli Pizza has been much more quiet and less busy of late since they installed the new porch dining area with all the graffiti. Maybe they are busier in the overnight hours, which would explain the heavy police presence here a few weeks ago as they were hunting for clues in the still unsolved First Avenue murder a few weeks back. Stromboli may be attracting the wrong late night crowd. Anyway, anyone who lives in this area and expects peace and quiet needs to move back to Beacon, NY.

Stromboli has been a disgrace to it's former self the last couple of years by blasting music and allowing customers to blast music from cars late night early morning all day it's a shame they became such a bad neighbor

There's so many layers to noise in the city, the myth that the neighborhood has always been loud is totally false, huge, huge difference between the usual nyc traffic sounds and short burst noise which was our normal and the almost constant thump and boom of sound systems pumping and suburban transients defending it

That said Hope the tenants and wings spot get there gas back soon!

That strip mostly closes early but the other outside areas get used as well as the tree seating.

Stay closed? Really? And throw their employees out of a job during this pandemic devastated economy? This neighborhood is being overrun by compassionate conservatives.

To "Anonymous" August 17th 12:57 PM - How long have you lived in the East Village? 2-3 years? A new college graduate? From Westchester? Our neighborhood has changed considerably since you inconsiderate "jerks" have moved in.

“..and allowing customers to blast music from cars late night early morning all day..”

WTF? You expect businesses to monitor traffic now? Truly delusional and time to move.

Hey Carol from 5th Street, Anon here. I've lived on the LES my whole life and that corner has never NOT been noisy. Don't be so defensive and presumptuous to those who speak their truth. Funny, I also used to live on 5th street for a few years and that was the last time I ever had a street facing apt. Why? Because of the NOISE. I don't expect this ever-growing neighborhood to conform to my lifestyle. Plus I'm a light sleeper. But I absolutely wouldn't wish a couple businesses to stay closed, forcing all their staff out of work. Those workers won't be able to pay their rents this month as it is, who knows how long before the gas problem is fixed. Have some heart. And maybe buy some earplugs so you can sleep, you seem cranky.

Anonymous August 18th 2:41 pm. - Ask anyone who knows me - I am far from a cranky person and am a very sound sleeper. However I apologize for characterizing you as being an arriviste from Westchester. I am just sick of "them" telling long-term residents to move to the suburbs if they don't like the noise. I love the vibrancy of the neighborhood but abhor the frat boy entitlement mentality that they can act like animals the rest of the neighborhood be dammed.
