What's happening at the ConEd substation?

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

There has been a lot of activity this past week around the ConEd substation along Avenue A and on Fifth Street and Sixth Street.

ConEd hired people to block parking spots on both sides of the facility (many of the vehicles had car alarms that liked to go off for no apparent reason, per neighbors).

A ConEd employee told this to EVG contributor Stacie Joy:

"We're replacing a transformer in the station. Since it's so small in there, they set up remote units for the employees. Not all the employees but some of them. We will be here for maybe one to two months, I believe. We will try to keep things quiet! It's a big job."

Here's a look at the Fifth Street side (and the top pic) ... with the two tanker trucks all but obscuring Sophie's...
... and the Sixth Street side...

Those trailers will be covered in tags within a week unless they also brought security with them.

The interesting thing about this being a transformer is that there were two large liquid transport trucks there yesterday morning too. Wouldn’t think those are needed for a transformer

I'm sure all the neighbors around there just LOVE IT !

You can’t even get by on the 5th street side, nice.

Big transformers like these are filled with special oils

Transformers are liquid cooled. The exact type of fluid varies.

You're *complaining* b/c ConEd is pro-actively trying to maintain the substation and its equipment? Get a grip!

Does anyone remember how bad it was down here when the power was out for 5 days after the hurricane - or is this a case of mass amnesia?

I'm glad to see ConEd doing what needs to be done, and BTW, they can't create storage space out of thin air.

11.40 AM:

"Get a grip!"

The hurricane was Sandy and the "Get a crip" line belongs with the "move to" line.
