Here is your new Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin-Robbins combo on East 14th Street

Hey, that new Dunkin' Donuts is now open at 542 E. 14th St. just west of Avenue B … and it is one of those combo operations with a Baskin-Robbins. (For those times when you feel like doughnuts and ice cream!)

Meanwhile, the Dunkin' Donuts a few storefronts away at 520 E. 14th St. has closed, as expected.

Be curious to see what awesome new business lands in the old DD space at No. 520. (Gino the tailor was rent hiked out of one of the three storefronts here back in the spring.) This will be prime real estate now that No. 520 is all that stands between the two incoming retail-residential buildings.

No. 542 was the former home of La Isla Restaurant, which closed in July 2012.

Ice cream in hot coffee is a nice treat every once in awhile.

Owned by the Carlyle Group, if you want to know to which set of sharks you are giving your money

I still miss the rotisserie chicken from La Isla, 5 bucks for an entire bird.

Dunkin' Donuts is a publicly traded company (symbol: DNKN), and not owned by the Carlyle Group. They are a private equity firm, not sharks.

Remember when Dunkin Donuts was a sit-down coffee shop, with real china and glassware? I think every single food and beverage vessel for customer use is disposable.

I don't know how you could not call these connected insiders sharks. Maybe it insults the animal.

The Chairman Emeritus of Carlyle Group is Frank C. Carlucci, whose claim to fame was Deputy Secretary of Defense (1981-1982) and National Security Adviser (1987-1989). After his government stint, he headed the Sears/ Coldwell Banker scam.

The current chairman of Carlyle Group is Lou Gerstner, the former Chairman of IBM.

Sir James Baker III, Chief of Staff (1981 -‘85), and Secretary of Treasury (1985-‘89) under Reagan; and Secretary of State (1989 - 1993) under George H. W. Bush Sr., is a “Senior Advisor.”

Sir George Herbert Walker Bush, Director of CIA (1976-‘77) under Ford; Vice-President (1981-‘89) under Reagan; and President (1989 - ‘93), acts as a broker and also senior advisor.

Kind of disappointing. I was hoping for something other than a chain. Wasn't a fan of La Isla. Yes the food was cheap, but it was super greasy and not very tasty. Even after a night of drinking.

As far as I'm concerned, there is no equal to Rocky Road.

Sad. There is no justification for using disposable items inside a restaurant. It makes the experience unpleasant and just generates more landfill.

Rocky Road ice cream is still one of my favorites. I call the Baskin-Robbins on Houston before going to get some. They don't always have it.
