Report: SantaCon starts in McCarran Park before heading to the East Village; plus, organizers respond to elected officials

[Photo from 2012 by A. Sasaki]

Busy day on the SantaCon 2015 front.

First! According to DNAinfo, the Santas will first assemble at McCarran Park in Williamsburg Saturday morning at 10. DNAinfo previously quoted a police source saying that the assembled will eventually arrive in the East Village to continue the festivities.

And where exactly here? You'll have a little longer to wait.

Per DNAInfo:

A major portion of this year's SantaCon route will be publicly released Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, said civil rights attorney Norman Siegel, hired last year as the event's liaison with government agencies and the press.

Meanwhile! SantaCon organizers and Siegel responded to the letter made public yesterday by 12 local elected officials.

You may read their response right here...

Seriously?! t's not a bar crawl?! They direct people from bar to bar.

"our 2014 event saw zero arrests and zero citations" because some most if not all the participants are the color of Santa's beard. When it become legal to be shit drunk in public and a mini riot in front of a bar? Meanwhile people legally (and sober) protesting for peace, equal rights, etc... never fail to have arrests.

If it walks like a bar crawl...

Ah, the annual Wringing of the Hands w/r/t SantaCon, my favorite time of year here on EV Grieve.

Not a pub-crawl? Really? Here is a novel idea then, eliminate the pub crawl.

And trust me very few New Yorkers participate in this sh*t show!

The letter was laughable. I have lost all respect for Norm!

They really should have left that "...not a bar crawl" off of their letter.
It just makes them look either like liars, stupid, or both.

"At this point, Santacon is a New York City holiday tradition for many. We invite you to join us on December 12th, to obtain first hand knowledge of Santacon. It is a fully public event, open to anyone wearing a holiday themed costume"

Oh, so now they've "legitimized" puking and pissing in the streets by self declaring it a NYC holiday tradition ? Not in my NYC, FUCK YOU SANTACON !!.

Anonymous said...

@3:13pm: You said it!

They think they've created a "holiday tradition for many"? Because it's a "tradition" for bridge-and-tunnel alcoholics to get wasted in the East Village? These people are as delusional as Donald Trump.

I say to them: get the fuck out of MY neighborhood, unless you want to put up a bond in advance for the damage you assholes will do. If you think Santacon is such a great idea, take your fabulous "holiday tradition" to your own hometowns, and get puke-drunk on your own lawns - and let us know how your family & neighbors like it.

I may forgo the "costume" - but the water balloons will be real!

The people who say SantaCon is all people pissing/puking/etc. sound like the people who say all Muslims are terrorists. Most SantaCon participants do none of these things -- they just dress as Santa and have a good time, something people here would know nothing about.

I'm not sure what's more depressing. The 40+ year old man with Peter Pan syndrome and a predilection for cheap dress up or the alcoholics in their 15th year of college who think it's socially acceptable to start drinking at 10am that he leads around like a herd of sheep.

Stop comparing yourself to persecuted religions. It only compounds the ignorance of your ilk.

!@6:36pm: Because YOU know ALL about it, eh?!

I speak as someone who has had people puking on the sidewalk in front of my house, and who has had people go out of their way to come INSIDE the front yard of my home (which has a tall wrought-iron fence around it) specifically to piss in my yard. I don't care about how many or few of these pub-crawlers are theoreticaly "well-behaved" - I care about the "traditional holiday gathering of the stupid assholes who have no manners" who bring their drinking problem to my doorstep.

If you don't know, now you know!

Thank you.

This would be an ideal time for the MTA to shut down the L for maintenance.

Anonymous said...

And they're back in the EV. I guess bypassing EV last year wasn't as "festive". It's only "festive" around where the bars are where they can have alcohol to have that delusion of bonhomie.

And it's only fitting it starts at Williamsburg. If you've been there on weekends esp. at Smorgasbord, it's like Santacon without the Santa suits.

What, r u a Millenial? I guarantee you that those of us who hate Santa Con and have lived downtown plus 20 yrs have had crazy, good times out beyond your wildest, frat house dreams.

Anonymous said...

@7:31pm: You are so right! I hope the MTA has *urgent* work that will require them to shut down the L train on Saturday!

Anonymous said...

Maybe they'll christen the new Astor Place CVS with festive holiday handjobs. For a good cause of course...

are you saying that the large number of folks from santacon that do piss/puke/etc. are as horrific as fanatic muslim terrorists?

Anonymous said...

I want to start a "thanks for dumping your obnoxious offspring in my neighborhood" con. We can start in Bergen County and end up on Long Island. Dressing as millennials and doing all the crap they do here in their parents towns.

Anonymous said...

I think so BG! They're raging a jolly jihad!

Anonymous said...

Is it a "bar crawl" not as we call it? Their sentence makes no logical sense. It did not differentiate itself from a bar crawl, just nonsensically qualified with "as you call it".

Anonymous said...

I want the name & home address of every drunken participant, so I can go pee on the front lawn or doorstep of their (parents') homes. I'll leave a note behind, saying it's to honor this great new "tradition" they so thoroughly embrace.

6:36 what a laugh - you are painfully ignorant

I fucking despise Santa con. It is a shit show to the fullest degree, plush full of bros, duche bags, belligerent drunks, and entitled pricks who think they own the city. I wish I could escape the madness. Bloody hell...

Anonymous said...

How many of these Santa's live here would be the Question of the day

Anonymous said...

It would be real nice if the police actually walked the beat one year during Santa Con in every neighborhood these idiots travel through and gave them summonses for open containers, public drunkenness, public uriniation et al. They could make a killing and do a public service. I for one am sick of having to clean their puke and urine off the sidewalk every year. One apartment in my building had a Santa Con party last year where there were literally over 100 of these idiots in one apartment piss drunk going out on fire escapes on the roof pissing and puking everywhere. Several calls of complaint to the police yielded no result as they probably had over 100 of these calls all over the neighborhood.

I am not looking forward to this seeing as I live near Tompkins park, a place where all of the drunk assholes conjugate. Whomever created this event needs to have someone puke and piss in front of their door, because that is what many do to our homes on this day. Let's see how they feel then.

Santacon says they donate to charity but they don't offer audited financials to verify their claims. They are not a 501(c)(3), either. How much do they donate to charity and how much is profit for the organizers?

Anonymous said...

Why not just send them to Hoboken? They are post-college morons who frequent the "bro" bars - perfect for NJ. Stay out of my 'hood!

Anonymous said...

Santacon is not a legit charity.

Anonymous said...

Where's that "journalist" to do an exposé to the organizers of this "charitable" event on that B+B blog? Nowehere, since she's amenable to this event and/or in India living her past life.

Anonymous said...

Let's plug up the 1st and 3rd avenue L train exits with some rags and newspapers and duct tape. That should stem the flow at least.

Anonymous said...

I didn't know this annual bro crawl had an official designated route. I just assumed they followed the trail of vomit.

Anonymous said...

@2:01: The lack of journalistic expose on this shitshow is a good part of why I'm convinced the NYPD is involved in some way, whether it's cops who are owners of bars or whatever. It's evident that SOMEBODY is getting paid $$$$$ to look the other way on Santacon every year. No one has ever offered any other (logical) explanation for the lack of enforcement and the general unconcern of NYC about this craptastic "event".

Did you see this insane comment in the NY Times:

“We’re in the process of an image change, and we are hoping we can do something that would be much more family friendly,” Mr. Glaser said.

Really? There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about Santacon that is family friendly - in fact it must be the most family unfriendly "holiday" event one could imagine.

So what is Glaser aiming to make it into ... "take your children out and get them drunk day"?? Is he encouraging underage drinking and taking kids into bars, or does he want to simply frighten young children with the sight of disgustingly vile "Santas" (and their Halloween-leftover ho "girlfriends")?

Considering that Santacon was supposedly created originally to protest the commercialization of Christmas, I think they've done a GREAT job in further commercializing and perverting Christmas.

You can read the whole article here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/10/fashion/santacon-2015-fights-for-the-right-to-party.html

PS: I love the presumption in the article where Glaser says "There's no Christmas parade in New York" - yeah, that's because a parade is not how Christmas is celebrated. We don't have a Chanukah Parade or an Eid-al-fitr Parade either. What a wanker Glaser is.

Wakka Flocka Killa and the rest of Stepford + Bourgeoisie don't take sides or have opinions. Criticizing Santacon would be too bold a flavor to go with their afternoon tea and finger sandwiches.

Norm Siegel should be identified as "former civil rights attorney." He's been a gun-for-hire for years now.

Will somebody please put a stop to the conjecture once and for all and interview a few bouncers in the area? They look at every single future-puker-on-my-front-steps' driver's licenses. Where are these binge drinkers coming from?

Remember, all of you who are thinking we complain too much, it's not the fact that people come to our neighborhood to drink - it's the extreme drunkenness we witness, the gratuitous yelling about "bitches and hos", and the fact that if you put a tv out for collection on bulk night there'll be a zillion pieces of glass and shards of plastic everywhere by 5am.

I just hate entitled narcissists.

And how do I know they're not from here?
-- What does a real EVer look like? Go to the post office. Not a platformed high heel in sight.
-- Check out the purses with gold chains slung across the body. More chains = more chance they're from New Jersey.
-- Visit your local bodega at 2am and see how many girls in 5-inch heels are being propped up so their escorts can buy a pack of smokes
-- Look at the midnight cabs-with-fares traffic jam on Saturdays up and down 1st and 2nd Avenues.
-- And lastly:
Go outside on Saturday at 11pm. Count the NJ license plates. And if there aren't enough of them to make your blood boil, go out again at 4am and count all the empty spaces.

If they were from anywhere near here they'd make it to their apartments before releasing their technicolor yawns.

Addendum to my earlier bitching:
How to stop this?
- Get off your butt
- Put on something you bought in the 90s (1890s or 1990s - I'm not picky)
- Walk out of your building
- Walk into a bar filled with annoying 20-somethings from the financial district
- Sit your ass down and buy a $2 PBR
- Nurse it for 3 hours
Take back the streets or quit complaining that somebody else is :))
