Closures on East 10th Street: Cafe Silan and Spirit and Matter

Two closures to note at 280 E. 10th St. near Avenue A.

Cafe Silan has closed. The cafe, which served a variety of coffee and house-made pastries with natural sweeteners (like silan, a Middle-Eastern date paste), opened in late 2014. We didn't hear any reason for the closure. It was a nice spot, and owner Guy Jacobovitz and his staff were always friendly.

Next door, the eclectic gallery/shop Spirit and Matter, which specialized in antique tribal art and folk art, has also closed...

We hear that the owner's wife has plans for a new shop in the space.

In more positive news at 280 E. 10th St., Thirstea is celebrating its eighth anniversary this week...

Any news on Spirit and Matter making a move elsewhere?

I'll miss being able to scare up Ric at Spirit & Matter any time I want to, but it'll be nice to have some Amanda Uprichard in the house anyway. For those interested in the tribal stuff, there will still be some there at the shop, and I'm sure one can contact Ric about Spirits and other Matters via said shop. Break a leg Amanda!

Aww damn. I liked Cafe Silan. It was a great spot with cool staff. Such a bummer, but not surprised. I'd walk past each day and see a few customers inside. I would imagine as a owner, one would have to sell a lot of coffee and sandwiches to make rent, let alone a profit. Operating a business anywhere, especially in NYC must be a hassle.
