Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery on 3rd Avenue has not been open lately

The Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery over at Third Avenue at East Ninth Street has not been open for at least a week … there's no sign on the door noting any temporary (or permanent) closure …

Birdbath, an eco-friendly spinoff of City Bakery, was closed for several days in February without any explanation until a sign arrived about a broken door.

As for now… calls to the location are kicked over to a generic voice-mail greeting … and the address is no longer mentioned on the City Bakery website ….

We reached out to City Bakery for more information about this location's status.

The bakery opened here in May 2011. The location on First Avenue near East 13th Street closed in March 2013.

Always liked them when they were on 1st, but the price of stuff just kept going up and going up (and the coffee kept getting smaller and smaller). That's not unique to them, or surprising, but I had to move on.

There have been signs up in recent weeks (months?) in the windows of what used to be the magazine shop at the NE corner of 6th Avenue at 10th or 11th St. - saying that Bird Bath Bakery was coming soon. I wonder what's happening there? Have not walked past there in the last 2 weeks. I note that there's no 6th Avenue shop shown on the screen shot in the article.

That guy who baked thecstuff on 1st and them did counter work at this place was so incredibly cool and nice. Always wantingvti chat, talk about the neighborhood, local bands and he'd throw in an extra cookie for free once in a while. Very "old EV" style. I hope he finds a decent place next stop.

Anon. @ 10:31pm - you are right about the name! I always wondered who thought that was an appealing name for a food purveyor.

Also found it weird that they would give a "green" discount to anyone arriving by bike or skateboard - but no discount for those arriving on FOOT!

They had a good thing going on 1st Avenue. Wonder if they got priced out or if the endless scaffold just rendered them invisible...

Too bad...I really enjoyed the snacks in this place. A little pricey but the mini pizzas, and mushroom pasta were to die for...

Pedestrians get no love.

Just got my fill of choco chip cookies at their Prince St location (aka Vesuvio Bakery, quite old school). They said the EV location has taken off for the rest of the summer until the college students (the bulk of their business) returns for fall semester. :-)
