About the new mural outside Key Food

If you've been by (or to!) Key Food on Avenue A in the past month then you've likely seen the mural on the Fourth Street wall...

Artolution — "a community-based public art organization that seeks to ignite positive social change through collaborative art making" — is behind this project.

A group of young artists from Central America created the various characters seen on the mural.

The mural was officially unveiled on July 20... and here's what's next for the work...

A sneak peek of today’s big reveal. Each of the individual characters were created by youth who escaped ongoing violence in Central American countries to find refuge in the United States. Their characters and the movements they developed with @kj3t will come to life later in August through Augmented Reality technology. Today the youth will present their mural and performances to the community! The youth are excited, the artists are excited - Let’s get this party started New York City! Join us at Avenue A & 4th Street at 5 PM. Been waiting to get a photo of the completed work ... though there were always delivery trucks or cars parked on Fourth Street outside the grocery... finally got a shot...

You notice how there is so little joy in the world. That even wall art can't be positive/pretty... it has to be about pain. You can't even buy a banana without being hit in the face with it. What a world. What a world...

Your oxymoronic comment added to the negativity, so what exactly are YOU doing to lighten up the world for us?

It's really a beautiful mural made by talented artists! Can't wait to go see it in person.

It's an observation. It just brings into question what wall art is about? The wall is not CNN. It belongs to the EV and it should be something positive and not a billboard for some group that wants sympathy and jerks off on all of us under the guise of "art".

Being negative about the efforts of others, while offering nothing positive that you have done to improve the community negates any merit in your argument.
You are simply a complainer.

If you know your art history, you will know that graffiti and murals, from the Berlin Wall to Belfast to Basquait to the Bowery Wall, were always more about conveying messages than painting pretty pictures.
Billboards sell things. This mural educates those who are either ignorant of injustices or prefer those injustices remain in place.

2 things

The places and artists mentioned ... the wall art was about local issues. Not foreign. And to say...

You are condescending and vile is to put it mildly. You make accusations without any basis. I've lived in the EV for close to 50 years and have done a lot for the community.

People like you are just negative and look for any excuse... even lies. Since you don't know me... you obviously are a liar.

SadSadSad!

It's very beautiful, but also so sad. I think it's great that technologies like augmented reality are used by companies to create more poverful and immersive experience for people. Even things like AR packaging can make people perceive information more deeply and meaningfully
