Idlewild Coffee Co. coming to 5th Street

There's a new tenant for the empty retail space at 300 E. Fifth St. at Second Avenue ... a sign is now on the door for Idlewild Coffee Co. ...

Idlewild takes over from another coffee shop — Southern Cross Coffee, which closed this past September after two and half years in service.

No word on who the owners are at the moment. They do have a placeholder website up...

Thanks to Steven for the photos and tip!

Because they didn’t want to call it “Queens?” Since there was so much derision over Brooklyn Coffee last week...

Coffee, I guess it's better than another bar.

All we need now is a Bronx Coffee and a Staten Island Coffee and we will never have any need to leave the borough.

Whatever they call it, it’s going to be tough to survive: Spiritea only a few steps away on the corner, Coffee Project across the avenue on 5th St, 728 Coffee and the French bakery up the street and Kona Coffee at 3rd Street. Mocha Cafe and Cafe de la Pace would have been significant competition two corners away were it not for the fire...Southern Cross had a wonderful staff, good coffee and food options and a friendly space but couldn’t make it. I wonder what Idlewild thinks they can offer to make it past the 1 year mark.

There was an Idlewild Coffee Co in Austin, now closed. Could these be the same proprietors(because where can you be more hip than Austin but the East Village in New York?)?
