[Updated] About that rolled-up carpet in the crosswalk

An EVG reader shared the following clips from last evening on the southwest corner of Third Avenue and Astor Place.

The first clip shows what at first glance could be a discarded roll of carpet ... placed right at the curb, giving pedestrians no choice but to walk over it. However, per the clip, the piece of carpet is moving...

And here, people are seen walking on the carpet...

Apparently, the man inside the carpet wants people to walk on him to satisfy a fetish. The reader had seen this happen in the past.

For years, from the late 1990s into 2013, a man, dubbed "the human carpet," visited clubs and other places to have people walk on him while rolled up inside a carpet. In this case, he instructed people — women in high heels a bonus — to do so with a sign. This MO is different. There isn't any consent.

To the reader:
"I think he waits for the snow so he can barricade the walk way and force you to walk on him.... without your consent. He moves around. The last snow storm he was at different crosswalks every night."

And some more background...

"When I was in high school there was another guy that would ask us to walk on him while in a rug. This was in the 1990s. This guy is someone else. For me, I have no problem with someone's fetish, but at least the guy from when I was in high school asked you to do it. I don't think it's cool to kinda violate those forced to walk on him when crossing the street. Anyway, I just thought people should now."

Oh, I walked on this guy once at a beer tasting event in Williamsburg, probably 10 years ago. Parked himself right in front of the bar so it was difficult not to step on him if you wanted to order a drink.

wow this is amazing

I wonder if, all this time, he's been using the same carpet?

I love this Human Carpet! I would gladly take the bait. Fun performance art -and fetish.

The carpet crawlers heed their callers:
"We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out
We've got to get in to get out"

There have been a number of "carpet guys." Many would show up (and lie down) at parties I produced. This one and his moving around are new to me but the fetish isn't. It's pretty harmless. And I guess stepping on him is better than being ankle-deep in a freezing puddle!

he's REALLY going to appreciate the videos, guys. i suspect many times a week!

C'mon. Kink amongst consenting people is perfectly fine, but consent is key. Sooner or later he's going to have a real problem with someone who doesn't appreciate being made an involuntary participant in his fetish.

Kevin carpet. He's a really nice dude if you take the time to speak with him , might not be him but it has been a long time without any social events . I suppose he got sick of waiting

Carpet Crawlers EVERYWHERE!!

Either he or some other person was doing this on St Marks place between first and second avenues as far back as the eighties. Gotta have been someone else, right? I mean, if it was him,he has got to be pretty old, and how is a senior citizen like him lying there in the dough?

He ought to start one of those "We Pretend We're..." Facebook pages. "We Pretend We're Carpet".

No throw rugs need apply.

Huh ! do they vaccum and steam wash the carpet everyday before laying down in it..

are they high or do it with all senses intact...

Anonymous said...

maybe he cant pay for a deep tissue massage..
maybe he's testing the waters to see if he has to hide a body in it and lay it in the open, will anyone even notice !

This is disturbing and sad. This person needs help.

I believe this is Kevin Carpet. He’s actually been doing this since the 80s.

Ummmm...snow. not dough.

The one who shows up at the parties I’ve been at actually has a catalog of carpets that he can coordinate your party decor with: various colors and depth of fiber- it’s fairly comprehensive

Beyond bizarre, beyond fetish, and likely to cause bodily harm to the person IN the carpet, and would provide an uneven (and thus dangerous) surface for an unsuspecting person to step on.

Thanks for the coverage; if I see such a thing, I'll be walking to another corner to cross.

This could be Kevin though he would be kinda old by now. He would pay squatter kids to sit on the carpet on 10th and A in the 90's and then ask us, "did anyone know I was in here? Do you think they knew?" We were like no they didn't know at all! and he would give us all $20. There were all kinds of guys like this around. The Stiletto Guy on 6th ave who would pay for you to tramp on him in heels. The You Owe me Money guy who wanted you to chase him around Tompkins yelling "hey you owe me money" and then he would pay you. And the leg rub guy I won't go into...ah the memories.
Carpet guy I know goes to Rev Jen's events and was part of the MR LES pageant at Cake Shop a few years ago.

Interesting, a real human rolled up in a carpet, like a big giant Burrito, Ayy Caramba!

I’m surprised nobody ever calls the police thinking there’s a dead body rolled up in a carpet.

Hey, does anyone here remember the guy who followed women who were walking dogs around Tompkins, and when he saw the dog doing its business, would ask, "Hey lady! Are you done with that? Can I drink it? Can I eat it? Do you want that?" This was during the mid to late 80's/early 90's. Last time I saw the guy was the late 90's on the subway and he was just quietly eyeing a little dog in a woman's large tote bag. Haven't seen or heard about him since then. Not that I miss him, mind you :) - just curious, promise!

Not sure if the carpet thing is a fetish or some type of performance art a la Vito Acconci who hid under a plywood ramp at the entrance of the Sonnbend Gallery in SoHo in 1972 and masturbated, supposedly 8 hrs a day, as gallery goers walked over the ramp. His spoken fantasies were then play over loud speakers in the gallery. Thing was called *Seedbed.*

That's just Kevin, he was a bit of a regular around the Goth/Fetish club scene in the late 90s and early aughts when I was active there.

mvd said...

Oh Jesus, the pee pee man! I certainly do remember him, and my very proper german shepherd at that time did not approve of him at all.

I totally stomped on this man at Happy Endings in front of the DJ booth back in 2005. Glad he's still doing his thing out there!

Anonymous said...

Reach out to him, maybe you and your friends can have fun on him indoors somewhere..:D

Highly disturbing and not in a good way. Anyone in this sad neighborhood still like, play guitar and sing? Now there's something would be truly freaky and disruptive in 2021.

This is pretty wild! I remember STAN MACK doing a strip about this guy in the Village Voice back in the 1980s.

I found it hard to believe until one night in the very late 80s, as I walked under scaffolding with a pedestrian walkway in front of buildings under construction along St. Marx Place.

There was a rolled up carpet right where people had to walk ON it in order to get through. I thought it was pretty strange for a rolled up carpet to be in that spot, so, after I walked on it, I looked back and saw it MOVE! I didn't want to blow his cover, so I kept walking.

If that's the SAME guy, he'd have to be in his 60s-70s, but hey, more power to him!!

Thanks man you Rock!!!!!

Kevin Carpet may well be the one in this rug. The other guy never does any street play.

nickn said...

You'd never find THIS in LA!

In the late 80's this was done on Hollywood Blvd during a big construction project.I have seen this.

Giorgio is another guy who does this. Regularly in clubs in LES and Brooklyn. Haven't met him but I heard he's a real sweetheart! I'm fine with it myself, but I can see how it can be unnerving to pleasure or just take part in someone's fantasy or kink without even knowing it
